Question

Menu works - but only locally

Sorry if this is a duplicate of a topic someone else has posted before - I tried to use Search but am getting errors whenever I try.

I have a menu created in Menubuilder, published as SWF. The links in the menu point to .exe assessment files that are posted on our intranet.

If the SWF menu is local on my drive, I can click the links and the .exe files launch just fine.

If I hard-code links into my intranet page, the .exe files launch just fine.

However, if I post the SWF menu to our intranet, and click the links, an IE window opens very very briefly and then closes. Basically all I'm seeing is kind of a 'flash' but that's what it looks like to me.

Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem? I have built these menus before and published them successfully (in fact they are still being used on our intranet today) so I'm a bit puzzled.

Thanks -

Anne

Hi Anne

So you are linking from a SWF MenuBuilder to .EXE files? That seems backwards to me but to each his/her own I suppose.

If you link to an EXE file from a web server (as your intranet likely is) you should see that each time you try to open the .EXE, you are greeted with a dialog that asks how you wish to handle the file. Exactly what the dialog presents will vary from browser to browser. But you normally must see the intermediate dialog.

I might suggest the following. Create .SWF/.HTM output from Captivate and place that on your intranet as well. The links should then be seamless.

Wow the browser made a hash of my attempt to use the bullet icon at the top of this interface, anyway here are the 3 sentences that didn't appear correctly at all in my first post:

If the SWF menu is local on my drive, I can click the links and the .EXE files launch just fine.
If I hard-code links into my intranet page, the .EXE files launch just fine.
However, if I post the SWF menu to our intranet, and click the links to the EXE files, an IE window opens very very briefly and then closes. Basically all I'm seeing is kind of a 'flash' but that's what it looks like to me.

You're absolutely right Rick, when the EXEs do run correctly, you get a dialog asking you whether you want to run the file or not. As a bit of background, I have never been able to get the SWF files to produce an e-mail so quiz-takers can send their results in, so I am publishing all of my quizzes in EXE. (We don't have an LMS, so that's our main way of gathering results.)

If I published the menu in EXE, I would want some HTML script to get the menu to appear right in the page. Without such a script, I have to ask the user to start the menu EXE file. Whereas, I do have a very nice HTML script that will cause a SWF menu to play without any user input. So that's the long and short of the file formats I'm using! :-D

Hi again Anne

I have a feeling about this. Rather than go round after round of trying things here, are you up for a brief connect session where I might see your desktop and we could converse on the phone? If you are up for that, send me a private email to rstone75 (at) kc (dot) rr (dot) com.

Cheers... Rick
