Merge with the background making the image disappear!

Hi all,

I have an issue where the Captivate simulation has not captured the background correctly (It only captured half the data being populated), and the following screen capture background shows one of the tabs highlighted which shouldn't be for the slide I want. To fix this I have used the slide with the wrong tab highlighted, and used an image (.png) of a clean tab that I am trying to place over the top like a sticker.

It looks natural and you'd never know it what it was hiding, however if I try to right click and select 'merge with the background' then it simply deletes the image?

I've looked at past forum posts and this issue stretches back to at least 2014. I've tried using some of those suggestions, such as making sure the Project Background is selected as the correct background. I've also tried saving the project and retrying, and even tried restarting Captivate.

Also, if I move the image over half an inch, or anywhere else on the slide, then I can merge with background???

Has anyone come across this recently and how did you fix it?

I'm running Captivate 2019 (64 bit).

P.S. For the Adobe developers, When I select the Background as the "Master Slide background", its white - as it should be, except for a blue square the same shape and size of the tab in question with the tab name on it. It seems to be stuck in that position. If I view the master slides menu - it only has a white slide with no blue square. I only see it when changing the background to that master slide.

Software simulations are based on the Blank master slide, where the background is indeed a solid color (whether it is white depends on the Project Background). That background is replaced by a slide background which is captured. You didn't specify the exact version number (CP2019 had many releases) as you find under Help, About Captivate. Moreover I don't know which theme you are using. If it is a custom theme, how is the Blank master slide looking?  Is it a non-responsive project? I am busy with a blog about backgrounds, and the merge functionality is for sure part of that blog. You are not the first to push me that way because several questions in this forum prove that there is some confusion.

My approach, to give you a direct answer, is to duplicate that slide and edit the background in a graphics editor, not try to merge. Personally I use Photoshop due to its easy roundtripping but any (bitmap) graphics editor is fine.

    Thanks Lilybiri,

    I am using version 11.5.5.553

Yes, I understand the background is replaced by a slide background which is captured. I am not really using a custom theme, more of a blank theme. The Master Slide is a blank white screen, which is replaced by the screenshot as i create the simulation. However as advised earlier, when I select the blank white screen as the master slide from the properties panel, there is the tab showing by itself. This shouldn't be there, which leads me to believe it's a developer issue, rather than a user issue. I did find a workaround, which I will explain in another reply.

As indicated above, I found a workaround that other people may like to use if they come across this same issue. Or you could, as Lilybiri advises, use a photo editor.

    The workaround is this:

Create the image you'd like to merge with the background.

Place it in the exact position where it would be when merging.

instead of merging with the background, make sure there are no other images/assets etc on the page.

Right click on slide and select Copy Background.

    Insert a new blank slide.

On the blank slide, right click and select Paste as Background.

This will paste the background, including the image as if it were one background screenshot. This is only an image of the background on the blank slide that can move around by accident. To fix this, right click the image and select Merge with Background. Or alternatively, select Lock Size and Position.

Now delete the old slide that has been corrupted.
