Question

Missing background

If I've created a slide and I decide the change the background, sometimes I will replace the background with a blank slide and then insert an image as a new background. I usually do this when the slide has audio connected with it so I don't want to move the audio or rerecord it. If I do this, sometimes it works and sometimes the background completely disappears on Preview. It's there is Edit mode and storyboard mode. it's there when I preview the slide individually. But if I preview more than 1 slide or an entire project and especially if I publish, the background is completely missing. Why does it do this and is it a bug I can work around?

FYI - when you merge an image into a background, you're not modifying the original background. Captivate creates a new background from the combined images and applies it to that slide only. The original background is still used for all other slides.

If you want to add your new merged background to additional slides, I'd do this:

1) Do the image merge on one slide, confirming the action when prompted.
2) Note the name of the new background Captivate creates (in the Library, it should be called "Slide # Background", where # is the slide number you did the merge on).
3) In the Slides panel on the left side of the Captivate workspace (or on the Storyboard tab), select all the other slides you'd like to apply that background to.
4) Right-click one of the selected slides and choose Properties.
5) Click the Change background image button.
6) Select the new background you identified in Step 2.
7) Click OK.
8) Click OK.

Captivate will apply the new background to all the selected slides.

Hi there janablessed

Can you please clarify something?

You said: ...sometimes I will replace the background with a blank slide and then insert an image as a new background.

When you do this, are you clicking Insert > Image? and adding the "background" as a simple image object on the slide? I'm thinking that if this is what you are doing, perhaps another object on the slide is interfering with it.

Cheers... Rick

I have a situation with backgrounds that I'm not sure what is going on. I think it may be happening in recording. The background will be the same for part of the timeline. Then, it changes to something else for another part. For instance, the slide is 10 seconds: the first 9 it will be all the same, then the last second the Bold button on the toolbar appears as if it's moused over. I thought a background was one static image for the entire timeline of a slide.

Also, if you merge another image into the background on these slides to "cover" that 1 second, the merged image doesn't show, the slide background essentially stays the same. I have to just copy the image into the timeline and leave it there; bloating up my project.

Also, does anyone know if you do have a background that is the same the entire timeline, and merge an image into it, if there are any issues with that? We're going back over some older stuff and get some really weird images suddenly appearing. For instance today, a background that had a dialog box with standard Word 2003 OK, Cancel buttons, had about part way through the slide an image fade in then out with some weird OK, Cancel buttons that were just the same color as the dialog box and squared.
