Question

Module launches, then goes black

I have a module set from our developer overseas. It's a primary module, with two sub-modules that launch at specific cues during the primary module ("Click here to launch the simulation").  The primary module plays fine. When the button is clicked to launch either of the two sub-modules, a new browser window opens (good), we see the first second of the sub-module (also good), and then the sub-module window goes black (not good at all) as we don't see nor hear the sub-module.

The difficulty is that it's playing fine for our developer. We've tried saving the published files to a desktop, to a local company server - each time we try it, we get the same "opens-then-black" experience. The developer says it's fine and functional since it plays on their servers and systems.

The developer is using Captivate 5 - - the same as they've used for previous modules, all of which launch and play perfectly for us.

At this point, we have no idea why this module is doing this. Any ideas?

This sounds like the issue that cropped up late last year when Adobe released a new version of Flash player that conflicted with Captivate text animations.

    Details here: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/node/191

Adobe released a patch for Captivate soon after that required developers to republish all Captivate 5 modules containing Text Animations.

The patch is available here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/11/solution-for-cp5-content-not-working-with-the-latest-flash-player-version.html

This patch was also incorporated into a Captivate 5 update here: http://www.adobe.com/support/captivate/downloads.html

Sounds like your overseas developer hasn't been keeping up to date with all patches. It also may be that you happen to be on the version of Flash Player that originally triggered this debacle: Flash Player version 10.1.102.64  The next version of Flash Player 10.2 contained a fix that allowed even non-updated Captivate content to play without issue.  However, the safest bet is to get your developer to patch their Captivate 5 builds and republish for you, because you can never be sure exactly which version of Flash Player your end users might be on.

I ran into a similar problem last year in presentations upgraded from Captivate 4 to Captivate 5, and  text animations were indeed the cause of the trouble.

    Hi mate.

Any chance you can give some screen shots or post a link to see this?

Not sure exactly what you mean, if it should be playing a file and is playing just black I would firstly think the file is not work properly and asked the sender to re-send.

Secondly, I would use a remote viewing program such as the free teamviewer.com, and have the person who sent it view the actual problem you are having and have them comment on it.

I dont htink the problem is with your end, but right now that is just a guess.

Hope this gives ya some thoughts,

    Ben.
