Need help creating custom captions

Hello smart people,

I am trying to create custom text captions, but having a problem getting them to behave properly.

Here's my process:

1. Created a caption in photoshop. Saved it as a bmp into the gallery folder using the proper naming convention. (I made it large: 400 x 600)

My problem:

The caption shows up and looks ok. But it comes in the size I created it (large!) and will not allow me to scale down. Also, the text has no margin and it shoved up against the top left margin.

I suspect this has something to do with the FCM files I see in the gallery folder-- but how do I create one of these? And using which program?

Thank you!

    Hi there

The size issue is exactly why when you look at the captions that Captivate supplies, they are pretty small. Further, you cannot scale them any smaller than the size they are. The takeaway from this is that you need to create them from the beginning at the smallest size you ever want them to be.

Indeed, the .FCM file is what governs the Margins. Actually the FCM extension provides a clue to Captivate's history. (It was originally known as FlashCam and the FCM is the FlashCam Margins file). You may use Windows Notepad (or the Mac equivalent if on a Mac) to make edits to the FCM files.

    Cheers... Rick

    Me again!

I'm having another newbie problem creating captions. When I create one and pull it into my captivate project, but then need to edit it (such as the margins aren't right, etc), any changes I make to the file will not update in captivate. I've tried shutting down, pulling the newly updated file back in through the menu-- nothing works. The only thing I can do is completely start over with a newly named file. But then I can't get rid of the old file from the captivate drop down menu--even though I've deleted both the .bmp file and the .fmc files from the gallery. I don't really want that drop down littered with old mistakes!

Any ideas on how to clear out the garbage?

Sorry, forgot to add this. You asked how to create the FCM files. I'd just open one and save it using the new name. Each of the captions you create will require one. Keep in mind that generally there are five captions per caption set.

    Caption with no callout pointer

Caption with callout pointer pointing Up and Right

Caption with callout pointer pointing Up and Left

Caption with callout pointer pointing Down and Right

Caption with callout pointer pointing Down and Left
