Need help getting button to trigger effect on text caption

Hi everybody,

I am working in

on a Mac (specs below)

I am very novice to Captivate (only my second week), but am familiar in other Adobe programs. I am trying to get a smart object that I made into a button to trigger an effect on a text caption. I have scrolled through the forums here and tried various things from advanced actions to just using the drop down menus in the Properties Inspector and nothing I have tried is giving me the result that I want.

Here is a screenshot of what I am working with.

What I want to happen is for the arrows to be the buttons (and they currently are). When the slide first appears I want only the image and arrows visible. Then when the user clicks on the arrow, I want the effect I selected (spiral in) to be triggered bringing the corresponding text in.

This is what my Properties Inspector looks like for each caption (the names are different for each)

And I also tried writing a few Advanced Actions that follow along with tutorials I found online and nothing is giving me what I want.

When I preview the slide I can see everything on entrance  and then when I click the button it applies the effect. I have double checked the advanced actions and usually when I try those nothing happens at all.

Is there anyway I can get this to work that way I am wanting. It seems like it should be simple and that I am just overlooking it.

The shape buttons are all pausing at the same moment, that is OK.

I just tried it out, and see what you mean. The text is there from the start, and that shouldn't be the case; you expect it to appear only when the button is clicked. I never used that Spiral effect myself, but see that you don't have any control over it, I mean you cannot see where the effect is starting at all, there is no visible motion path which you do have with other Entrance effects. Either you'll have to create a custom effect, where the motion path starts with the Text outside of the stage, or a combination of an Alpha to + a standard Entrance effect. 

Tried the first out with a simple left to right motion path. I edited the paths so that they start all at the same horizontal position and end at the same horizontal position. So happy with the Rulers and Guides that we finally got in Captivate, they are very useful for this type of design:

First question 'When I preview slides', hope you don't mean 'Play slide'? Because that one is not a real Preview, only meant for editing (synching) use.

Which version are you using? Can you post a screenshot of the timeline, want to see the pausing points of the shape buttons (Captivate has no smart objects, only smart shapes that can be turned into buttons; smart objects are in Photoshop and other Adobe applications).

It is a pretty simple setup, should even work with a simple action 'Apply Effect'; at least if you are in version 9 where you have the option to uncheck 'Continue playing project'.

When I test to see if the effect worked I use one of these depending on what exactly I am looking at (just the slide or seeing how is flows overall.

Here is a screenshot of the timeline for that slide.

Sorry, I'm not well versed in the lingo yet.
