Open URL or File Action not working (Captivate 7)

I have written dozens of training courses using Captivate that employ buttons to open PDF documents (supporting documentation). I am currently coding smart shapes as buttons, specifying the Open URL or File action, or by executing an advanced action to do the same. The documents are found in a subfolder (documents), so the URL/File target is: \documents\<file name>. Same syntax that I have used for several years. However, once published using Captivate 7, these buttons no longer work. I have exhausted my methods for opening files without success. Any ideas?

BTW, I am publishing as .exe, so the SWF security snafu should not be the issue.

Welcome to Adobe Forums.

This is a known issue with Captivate 7, as a workaround place your document on the published folder (Not in a subfolder).

Change the location for that action and republish the output

I find this frustrating and ridiculous. How can such a SIMPLE thing be an issue for YEARS??!! WTH! I have started a new position and have to now use Captivate 9, after using Storyline for a couple years... WOW! What a disappointment Captivate is! Half the functionality of Storyline and our business pays a fortune for it. I wish I could convince them to use Storyline instead, maybe this simple issue, with no fix for years, will convince them!

It is much more probable that you have to learn Captivate. I can confirm that it has a lot more functionallity than StoryLine, can create real responsive projects, has a lot more possiblities to reuse items instead of copy/paste. So easy to trash an application you don't know. TO me SL is really too low-level....

so, then if it is so great, can you answer my question rather than defend it? You would have to admit, adding a link is not rocket science. Adobe seems to have issues, even when using Captivate with their own LMS software..

Hi Guys,

''Ópen URL or file'' action is working fine in captivate 9. You need not to place the reference file in the output folder. Because, Captivate does it automatically.

The only problem is, when we try this locally it is not working. However, it works fine in LMS.

The most likely reason it is not working locally is that you have not set up Flash Global Security to trust the local publish folder location.

Hello,

I'm facing the same problem with Captivate 9. "Open URL or file" action is not working.

I have tried the following solutions, but still it is not working.

Solution 1: Placed the reference file in the output folder and added the reference link in the "imsmanifest" (<file href="RCA_Example.pdf"/>).

None of them worked fine. Please help me out with this.

I want a PDF file to be opened in a separate window when a learner clicks on the button.

I have used a 'Button'' here.

I'm not able to achieve in this method.

Thanks, that certainly works. For obvious reasons I would like to be able to place my documents in a subfolder. Any idea when thisissue will be resolved?

I am having the same issue. Our files go on a LMS so our paths are set up with a forward slash instead of a back slash "/documents/<file name>". Taking the documents out of the subfolder and placing them in the root does work, but is going to be a bear as we upgrade a couple hundred modules to Captivate 7. I would also really like to know when this known bug will be fixed.
