Question

Partial PPT imports and with very random success

I have a collection of 35 PPT files that I need to record in Captivate (not Presenter) before next Tuesday. Of the 35, only 7 imported perfectly. The others stopped the import within the first, second or third slide. It appears to be some kind of PPT/Captivate compatability issue but not sure. Has anyone seen this?

I've reinstalled Flash, re-created one of the PPT's from scratch that failed to import, deleted specific items, etc. but to no avail.

I'm desparately seeking a solution since my new job is relying on getting these done in a certain timeframe and now this basic feature in Captivate isn't working!!

Thanks for any insights...

OK, got it, Rick! Sometimes it just takes me two times to get it since this is my first project ;-) Thanks so much for your patience and great support!

Hi again Rick, and thanks for your quick responses :-)

Sorry I didn't explain that very well...

I'm having the opposite issue. The slides automatically advance but I want the user to have to click the NEXT button to get to the next slide instead of it automatically going to the next one. Because I used this funky workaround to import my PPT as a movie instead of as a PPT file, I didn't have that on-click option. Can I get it back, somehow?

If not, is there a way to get my already-recorded 5 .cp3 files that I successfully imported as PPT to advance automatically, so that all files behave the same way in the collection?

Cheers!

Hi Sherry

Okay, color me totally confused. Your post at 02:25 PM said:
However, I just realized that these custom recordings didn't have the option to "advance to the next slide 'on mouse click'." Is there a way to stop at the end of each of my recorded slides so that the user has to click to get to the next page?

I then outlined how to insert a Click Box object on each slide. Please note that by inserting a Click Box object on each slide, the slide should stop and wait for user interaction before proceeding. Isn't that what you wanted?

You came back to say:
I'm having the opposite issue. The slides automatically advance but I want the user to have to click the NEXT button to get to the next slide instead of it automatically going to the next one.

That's what the Click Boxes should be doing. Assuming they are correctly configured. The possibility exists that they aren't configured to Pause. Have you double checked that?

Hi Rick,

Thanks again for your help the otehr day.

I've successfully recorded about 20 tutorialsnow, using the method / workaround and it seems to have worked well.

However, I just realized that these custom recordings didn't have the option to "advance to the next slide 'on mouse click'." Is there a way to stop at the end of each of my recorded slides so that the user has to click to get to the next page?

Thanks,
Sherry

Hi again Sherry

When you choose the option to advance the slide on Mouse click, all Captivate does is to insert a Click Box object on each slide that is programmed to move to the next slide when clicked. This is super easy to insert in Captivate. Just edit the first slide and click Insert > Click Box. Configure the Click Box with no feedback captions and program it to advance on mouse click. Size it to cover the entire screen area. Now copy it to the Windows Clipboard.

Here's where it gets fun. Select all the remaining slides and paste the Click Box across the selection. Presto and problem solved!

Welcome to our community, Sherry

One possible solution would involve configuring PowerPoint to present in a Window. Then use Captivate to record the presentation as it plays. You should end up with a pixel perfect recording.

Oh, and please submit a bug report to tell Adobe about the import issue.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your response. So, I'm going to use the 720x540 size and overlay that onto the PPT window and then do a custom recording, so I don't get all the bubbles, clicks, etc. Does this sound right? It appears to be wysiwyg also, as you suggested.

Another thing I noticed about imports that (I thought) were successful were they changed the title of each page from maroon to blue - blech! I guess this is part of the earlier bug report that I should report.

Curiuos, should I really be using Presenter for this instead?

Thanks again,
Sherry

Hi Sherry

Hmmm, I thought all you had to do in PP was to click Slide Show > Set up Show... then choose the "Browsed by an individual (window)" option.

At least, that's how it happens in mine. (Version 2003)
