Question

Positioning Objects Outside Stage Boundaries

Good afternoon.  I am working on a Case Study that I intend to submit, but have run into a bit of a road block.

It seems that I can only place an item (like a rectangle) that only spans beyond the stage to a certain extent.  Is there any way to make shape as long (left to right) as I need, even beyond the current limitations?

Any help is much appreciated.

Adam

I can think of two potential ways to do what you want within Captivate’s limitations.

1) Since you want the maximum amount of time to show the image on the slide, you could size the image so the width was exactly the same as the left edge of the stage to the right side of the slide. Then setup a LeftToRight Motion Path so when the motion ends the left side of the image is touching the left side of the slide. It’s not ideal because then you’re limited to the size of the image and likely a reduced speed of animation than you would want in both cases.

2) Tile the image into multiple pieces and then stagger the animation for each piece so it appears as one single image when the slide is playing. This is going to take a bit of fidgeting regarding the best size of the tiles, where you set the end point of the animation, and when each piece starts moving. There is also the potential for the animation to not quite play correctly so you would end up with gaps or overlap between the pieces as well.

The image below shows the animations playing and the two images being seamed together so you can't tell that it's two images sliding across the top of the slide.

Granted, neither option is the best, but at least you have some options.  =^ )

Thank you so much, Michael!  This is very helpful.  However, I've already submitted my Case Study, and in the end, I just fidgeted with the length of time of the motion path, and that seemed to do the trick!

In the future, I think another option, would be to have another (Foreground) image with a right to left motion path to MIMIC longer perceived motion.  I tested this with my Case Study afterward, and it worked rather nicely, but went beyond the scope of my original case study.

Why would you want that? It is possible, as you can see here; You can use it for some effects. How big is he 'extent' that you want?:

My end result would be to have a left to right motion path associated to the rectangle (in my case, the background).  But, I need it larger (to move longer) than what I can currently make it.  See the attached image.

RED X = Outer limit of stage beyond which I can not place a shape

BLUE X = My Shape

YELLOW X = Usable zone beyond the perimeter of the Stage

BLACK X = The Stage

Stage Limits

Thanks for anything!

Why do you need such a long motion path? What happens outside of the stage can never be visible in the published file. I still do not understand why you would need to place an object so far outside of the stage. You can edit a lot of properties for effects, you can combine effects, change the duration, the motion path itself, combine motion with scaling etc. If you explained really what you want to do, maybe I could offer a work flow.
