Hello,

Is there a way to customize this boring play preview screen?

Seems like there's gotta be a way, but I couldnt find any settings for this.

You can add a background image. Look at the Preferences under the Project > Start and End settings. There's a Browse button just under the AutoPlay checkbox. That browse button allows you to select an image from your system to be on that start slide. Try it out.
