Problem with changing an objects "State" overriding a timeline pause

Here's my setup:  I have a single slide for the learning to select 9 different "text buttons" to view 9 different definitions.  To do this, I've set each of the buttons to change the "state" of the initial introductory image to a "text caption" containing the definition for that buttons label.  I also have three navigation buttons (exit, back and next; button_19 _20 & _21) with pauses built into them at the end of the timeline; which coincides with the end of the audio narration for this slide.

Here's my problem:  the timeline runs and pauses as it should until the learner selects one of the "text buttons" after the timeline has paused; at which point it seems to send a "continue" command and overrides the pause and takes the learner to the next slide.

Does this have something to do with the "States" function?  I used to do this exact same thing in Cap 7 with advanced actions without any problem.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If this is Captivate 9, look for the Continue Playing Project checkbox in the Actions section and deselect it for each of the buttons.

RodWard & LilyBiri....thank you both very much for your responses....that was it exactly.

We just upgraded from 7 to 9 and little things like this are still catching me by surprise.  I appreciate the help.

In previous versions a simple action would always release the playhead, workaround was to replace the simple action by a standard action:

Why choose Standard over Simple action? - Captivate blog

Since you are talking about 'states' I suspect you are using Captivate 9? In that case, the workaround is no longer necessary:
