Question

Publishing Captivate

Hello everyone,

If I create an e-learning in Captivate 9 and publish it as an SWF file, does the learner need to have Captivate 9 installed on their pc in order to take the learning? I need to create a learning in Captivate 9 for a company who does not have an LMS? What do they need to have or do in order to be able to take a learning I created in Captivate 9?

Thank you ahead of time for your assistance.

D

    Hi Deborah,

There is a bunch out there, GoDaddy comes to mind but if you have never used one before there is a learning curve to understanding how they work and what you need to do to with your Captivate files to get it to publish. The learning curve is not as steep as setting up a "Moodle" server but just be aware!

    Cheers

You can use a webserver, but will have to take into account everything in that case: how to protect the eLearning from access by unwanted people, how to track views, scores and attempts on quizzes etc. There are free LMS's around like Moodle.

You are working in the authoring environment, which is Captivate and the 'raw' files you are using are cptx or cpvc files. When they are published you have either output to SWF or HTML5 (for interactive cptx-files) or to MP4 (for non-interactive files). A SWF file has to be launched from the companion htm file (has same name as the SWF file), a HTML5 output has to be launched from the index.html file. All output will play in a browser, which is what the users will need. Be careful with SWF output: more and more browsers do not include automatically the Flash plug-in anymore. If the learners want to watch the course on a mobile device SWF output is simply impossible. I would strongly recommend to keep to HTML5 output.

    Hi Deborah,

You don't need to have Captivate to view a Captivate course. All you need is a web browser.  You only need an LMS if you need to track and document student's progress. You do,  however need access to a web server to host your course on.

    Cheers

    Thank you Steve.

Do you know of any servers to use free or not too expensive?

    Thank you.
