Quiz problem

I'm currently using Captivate 3 to create my lesson. The lesson is divided into 4 sections. There are 4 buttons on the main page which link to each of the sections, respectively. The last part of each section is a Question slide. After the user completed each section, they will be brought back to the main page.

The problem: If a user skips an earlier section, he will not be allowed to answer the questions when he returns to that particular section. Example: The user completes section 1 and 2 but skips section 3 and goes directly to section 4. When he returns to section 3 subsequently, he would be unable to answer the questions on the Question slide. The error message is "You did not answer the question completely".

My attempts to solve the problem: I tried to change the setting under the quiz preference->pass of fail->if failing grade to "infinite attempts". However, this will allow the user to answer the question again if they got it wrong the first time, which is not my purpose. I want to allow only one attempt in answering any questions.

To sum up, I want to (1) give my users the freedom to complete all sections in any sequence without difficulty (as explained in the second paragraph) and (2) allow only one attempt in answering any questions (as explained in the third paragraph).

I hope I have provided a clear explanation of my problem. Kindly advise me.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Seems like there is no other way out. Guess that I'll have to create the lesson the way Captivate wants rather than creating for the benefit of the user.

Thank you so much for your help. Now I can move on and stop wasting time with this issue.

Captivate *really* doesn't want you to skip over questions in a quiz.

My understanding is that once a "reportable" question or interaction appears in your project, Captivate assumes that a quiz has started and that skipping around or going back to a previous question at that point would be considered cheating.

I'm not clear on how setting your quiz to "Optional" and/or selecting the "Allow backwards movement" option in the Quiz Manager might affect this, but if either/both of those don't make your problem go away, I think you just have to accept that Captivate expects all quiz questions to be in a contiguous chunk and design your course accordingly:

Make sure individual projects have no more than one set of quiz questions, and make sure the quiz is all one chunk of questions. Your quiz can be a standalone project (preferred) or it can be a group of slides at the end of a project if you choose to mix content and quiz in the same file.

It may not be the best from an instructional design perspective, but it does always seem to work.

Hi jbradley88, thank you for your help.

I thought of breaking up the lessons but my lessons will be distributed via CDs. Please correct me if I'm wrong, the links will not work if the name of the user's CD drive is different from mine. For example, if I programmed the button to open the file from a D:\ drive (my CD drive), the user will not be able to open the file if the name of the user’s CD drive is not D:\. In addition, breaking lessons up will also create problems when it comes to score reporting.

I encountered another problem this morning. There is another lesson consists of 50 slides with only a single section. Slide 15, 30 and 45 are question slides. There is a button linking from slide 32 to slide 28. After the user click on the button on slide 32 to go back to slide 28, the same message will be shown when the user attempt the question on slide 45. Why does this happen? It is because it is considered a second attempt when the user looped back to a previous slide with a question slide in between?

    I’m going crazy… Please help...

    HI memem11

jbradley88's suggestion will work fine on CD as long as you use the action of "open other project". Using this action, you browse to the project (.CP) file of the other project. When Captivate creates the output, it is aware of the other file and no absolute path is created. You simply need to make sure all the files exist in the same folder.

    Cheers... Rick

Hi memem11 and welcome to the forums!

Have you tried enabling the "allow backward movement" option in the Quiz Preferences?

If that doesn't work, my suggestion would be to break your lesson into 4 different projects and have your buttons jump to the new file instead of to a new slide in the same file. Captivate doesn't expect you to jump over questions a quiz, so using separate files would prevent any questions from being "skipped".
