Quiz questions advance without answer

My client noticed that if he clicks the submit button on any given quiz question, the slide advances even if he has not answered the question yet. This was a particular request of his that the trainee be required to take every single quiz question. I had it set at "Answer all -- the user must answer every question to continue." I assumed this would give me the functionality requested. But after his email I tested it and sure enough, it advances without an answer if I click submit. So I went back in and changed the setting to "Required - the user must take the quiz to continue" hoping this would work, but it didn't change anything.

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Arthur Lee

    Correct answer RodWard

I would suggest you try NOT replacing the Submti button with your own image button just to see if that helps as well.

You mentioned that you have all captions turned off in Quiz Properties.  But if you want them to see a caption warning them about not having answered the question then you will need to at least have the Incomplete option still ticked.

I just did a quick test on this issue.  It seems if you have the Incomplete caption turned off, AND you have both Correct and Incorrect captions turned off as well, then if the user does not answer the question and clicks Submit button, they will be marked wrong on that question but get no warning.  So while it looks like they just move to the next question, what is really happening is that their NON answer has been marked as an incorrect answer.

So, as I mentioned above, if you want them to be told that they need to answer the question before continuing, then you MUST have that Incomplete caption turned on.

It should not be possible to click the Submit button and advance without answering the question. It sounds to me like you may have messed with the required elements on the quiz slides and now your  question slides are not functioning correctly.

Open a new blank project file, add a few quiz questions, don't change anything about them, then publish and try to do what you are saying here (click Submit without answering the question).  If it will not advance unless you answer the question, then I think we can safely say your current problem project has dodgy question slides.

In the dodgy project, try hiding all elements on your quiz slide (using the small eye icon on the time line).  If your Quiz Title caption and/or Quiz Text captions also disappear (or are not there to begin with), then you will need to remove those slides and rebuild them from scratch by inserting new ones.

If you want 300 more tips, you'll need to read the book:

Thanks, Rod. I'll check on this tomorrow. The quiz questions were made one at a time. I simply added in the text for the question and the options. I haven't messed with anything that I thought should mess up the project. I replaced the default submit button with an image of my own--that is all.

The course consists of 55 quiz questions in total. They appear one at a time every few slides or so. They are graded but not reported. Because I am using them as a tool by which to help prepare the student for the exam, I have the "try again" and "correct" captions set to appear upon answering the question incorrectly or correctly, respectively. They have infinite attempts to answer these questions correctly.

Then, at the end of the course, these same questions appear again, but this time in succession one after another. However, this time the questions are acting as a true exam. The student has one chance to answer them correctly, and I do not need/want them to know right then whether they got that one question right or wrong. So I have unchecked all button/caption options other than the submit button.

In testing it, this appears to be the problem. When I try to go past the quiz questions that are interspersed throughout the course without answering the question first, it will not let me. The 'try again' caption appears because it is set to do so upon a wrong answer. BUT in the final exam questions, it is not set to appear because I do not want them to get an incorrect 'try again' caption if they get it wrong. Because this is not set to appear, it appears Captivate just lets them move on without answering the question. Perhaps I am still missing something, but it seems that Captivate does not see a difference between a wrong answer and no answer. The solution for both is the "Sorry, incorrect, try again" as opposed to that for a wrong answer and some other option, like "you must answer the question before proceeding," for questions that are not answered.
