Question

Record when cells are selected

Hi,

I'd like to have a simulation where the user clicks through a series of screens, for example the steps it takes to print a spreadsheet. When you print spreadsheets, it's common to set print area. To do that, you need to select the cells. Unfortunatly, when I record myself doing this it plays those few seconds instead of making the user click and drag to select the text. Is there a way to make this work? I suppose it's because everything else is just a snapshot when I click, but this would be many screenshots to go from the deselcted cells to when they're all selected. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Running Captivate 9 on Windows.

Maybe you can adapt what I did in this tutorial to work for your situation. It's worth exploring but the appearance of selecting cells might be different than what I've done. Take a look and decide for yourself if this might be something you can kind of fake. https://youtu.be/KEOPEqny8KU

This is great, thanks! Right, I won't be able to change to appearance of the selected cells, but this will get me closer and generally if I need to drag and drop I'll already know how to do it. Thank you!

Dragging with the mouse cannot be done by the software simulation capture, it is replaced by Full Motion Recording slides. It is possible to select with shortcut keys instead of dragging, and that could be simulated and have been doing by the learner in a training or assessment simulations.  Sitll not done with the two other blogs, but maybe this first one could be of interest:

Thanks for that quick response. For this beginner lesson I'm trying to make I don't think having people select cells with the keys will work. I'm kind of surprised this isn't an option. A different example, if I were teaching copy / paste I'd have to use the keyboard? It'd be great if you could have people use the mouse, and if they click and drag within a target area then it plays the full motion recording. If they don't, I could have a suggestion pop up.

Thanks for your help!

Having taught spreadsheets even before the release of Windows, I tend to disagree...

There is a difference with copy/paste, you can have the learner use the right-click menu, or the Edit menu instead of the shortcut keys. That it is not possible to have the learner drag with the mouse must be due to the programming being a lot more complicated. AFAIK no eLearning authoring tool is providing that possibility for a training simulation.

Just another tip: if you aim at HTML I always replace the FMR slide by video demo slides.  FMR-slides are originally based on falsh technology.  If you publish to HTML, they will be converted to MP4 but I have seen many complaints that this is not always working perfectly.
