Relative vs absolute addressing

I used Captivate Project and successfully created menu pages with buttons to jump to existing projects. It worked just fine. (Using Captivate Menu Builder was a disaster but that's another story).

When I copied all of the files to a disc and ran the project from the disc, only the first page worked. Whenever I used a button to call/jump to another file it couldn't locate the file. The error message listed out the complete file name of the original file location, hard drive letter and all. It wasn't even attempting to look on the disc.

I've tried using a link to a project rather than a file but that had the same problem.

Can anyone tell me how to get the button to go to a relative address instead of an absolute one?

Thanks a bunch

Normally, all you do is point at the project. You then end up with a relative link. Note that in the end, you will need to place both the output you are creating as well as the project you linked to in the same folder, but I've never seen it fail that way.

Some folks grow confused about linking in this manner and don't understand how Captivate can know what it is supposed to link to, because you are ultimately pointing at the .CP file for the project you are linking to. But Captivate has always sorted it out for me. Exactly HOW it works is still a mystery. I'm just happy it works.

    Hi Rick,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. I'll give the 'project' link another go and see if I can get it to work that way. I'll let you know how I get on..........

    Hi Rick,
You've earned your genius badge - Thank you!
I tried it out on one of my links, using the 'project' link rather than the 'file' and copied all the published files to another directory. Must have missed a file in my previous attempt - might have been zipped . Anyway.......

Not sure where I came unstuck last time but this time it worked for me. Even when I don't move the .cp files over to a new location with all the others, the link setup as a 'project' link still works. As you say, it must be magic!
    Here's your thank you bunch
