Question

Removing double audio playing on a slide?

I am currently working in Adobe Captivate version 8.0.2.266 on an HPZ220 with 16 gig ram.

I have recently encountered an issue where a couple of my slides are playing two sets of audio files when the project has been published.

I only have one audio narration file loaded on the timeline. It seems that the affected slides are pulling audio in from the previous slide or that the previous slide is replicating its audio on the next slide.

When previewing the project in captivate everything works as it should.

The problem occurs when I publish the project.

I am publishing the slides as SWF as our facility does not currently support html5 as an option.

I have tried a number of things to solve this problem based on some similar situations posted in the forums.

On the publishing side I have tried publishing in both Flash 10, 10.2 and 11.

I have closed the project, cleared document cache from captivate, reopened the project and republished. This did not help.

I have deleted and recreated the slides from scratch and republished.

I have then hidden the affected slides and created new ones then republished.

I have redone the audio files as well as given them new unique names and then added them to the newly created slides timeline.

I have deleted the previous audio file and re added the new audio to the affected the slides to rule out corrupted audio files.

I have deleted the audio files from both the previous and affected slide and re added the new audio to the corresponding slides to rule out corrupted audio files.

I have used both .mp3 and .wav file formats when recreating the slides on each of these situations above.

I have also checked that the master slide is not playing any background audio as well as if any of the text caption boxes have audio assigned.

If I hide the slide that is affected the offending audio from the previous slide simply moves to the next slide in the filmstrip.

I have removed audio completely from both slides and yes it still pulls audio in. I have checked the elements on the slides to make sure none of them have audio attached.

I am coming to think this is a software glitch in captivate during the publication process. I am posting this to find out if anyone has experienced this or has found a viable solution to this problem?

Update :

Just before posting this question and as a last ditch attempt to fix this issue I deleted all the audio from the timeline from the slides that were affected, starting with the slide prior to the one where this issue occurs. I then added the audio a title text caption box which stays up for the duration of the slide. I matched the various elements on my slide to the audio. I did this for every slide upto the beginning of my quiz slide. I then published the project again and this seems to have solved the double audio stream playing at the same time for all the slides.

I am going to post this as it may help someone stuck with the same problem but also to see if anyone has found an alternative viable solution to this issue.

I'm ujsing the most recent Captivate 2019 version 11.5.5.553 at the time of this post and experienced the same problem, "Adobe Captivate audio of next slide keeps playing on the previous slide", with several occurences on a project of more than 200 slides.

When I discovered your post, I had done all the things that you did plus some additional ones. I also believe that this is a software and not a user issue, probably a file corruption of some sort when saving larger project files.

Since there was hardly anything that could be found on the Internet, I'm posting this information to help anybody experiencing the same problem. There is no solution that I could find, but a rather simple workaround.  If you would like to give it a try, I suggest the following steps.

  1. Make a copy of your Captivate project for safty reasaons
  2. Go to the slide where you are experiencing the audio problem
  3. Open Timeline and scroll down to the audio recording
  4. Note/remember the name of audio file
  5. Right-click and remove the audio file
  6. Go to any shape on your slide of your choice, or otherwise create one
  7. With "Properties" open, click on the said shape
  8. Then click on the "Add Audio ..." button that you should see in "Properties" on the right to open "Object Audio"
  9. In Object Audio, select "Library" to open the file library
  10. Scroll the files listed on the right until you find the file name of step 4. above
  11. Selcet the file and click OK

It's nearly effortless and only takes seconds. In my opinion, it's not necessary to perform these steps on non-affected slides until quiz slides.

I wrote the above detailed steps for users that are still beginner level and hope it will be useful.

I found another and even easier solution to this very annoying problem. It's rediciuloulys easy, compared to the time it costed me to find it. I cannot guarantee that it will work in every instance, but so far it did.

I noticed that duplicate audio on the same slide, or premature audio of the next slide on the previous slide appears to occur, when the length of the audio file at the bottom of the timeline is equal to the length of the other items above.

Simply point with you mouse on the very end of the timeline bar above the audio bar, click it, hold your click, and pull it a little to the right, that it exceeds the length of the audio bar.

Should you still encounter the problem, or even hear overlapping audio, you may need to delete the relevant audio files from the library, recreate the audio, and repeat the procedure.

Object audio is fine, as long as you don't need CC because that is only possible with Slide audio.

I didn't see if you tried to start the audio clips (slide audio) on each slide a bit later than the beginning of the slide timeline, and leave some gap at the end as well?

@Lilybiri I did not try that but will keep that in mind and reference you later if that helps the issue the next time I encounter it.

Hi there

I see you have resolved your issue and that's great!

What we note about Captivate is that it's possible to attach audio to nearly anything. And it's not always easy to figure out where audio may be coming from once things like this occur.

Given what you posted, it would seem that you had audio assigned to an object that was being played simultaneously with slide audio.

One place to look for things like this is the Advanced Audio Management dialog. To see it, click Audio > Audio Management

And from the ensuing dialog, enable the option to Show object level audio.

These steps should be able to assist in determining where audio is coming from.

Cheers... Rick

I think I check that but not sure I had checked the show object level audio. I will surely look into it. Thanks for the assist.
