Question

rollover caption previous state displaying on revisited slide

I have a 5 slide project. Each slide has buttons on the left which give the user the opportunity to choose which slide they see next. Each button also has a rollover caption describing what the target slide will show them.
The first time a user goes to each slide the rollover effect works fine. However, when the user returns to a previously viewed slide, the slide loads displaying the over-state of the last button selected on that slide. I have played with the timing extensively, the positioning of the rollovers and targets, and the content of each slide looking for any issues. Each rollover and button on each slide is unique and is not copied on to any other slide.
After watching and watching I finally realized that when a previously viewed slide is reloaded, it is displaying the over-state of the last button clicked. If I reposition the rollovers so that I click the button without the mouse being over the rollover, the issue is resolved. So now I know now that I can alter my buttons and eliminate the problem but I am very happy with the navigation and don’t want to change anything. I think the issue is specifically caused because the buttons cause a “jump to” another slide which leaves the current slide with out a chance for the rollover state to change.
So… is there a way to reset the over-state of a rollover caption when a button is clicked? Is there a way to directly link a rollover to a button? This, btw, is a disjointed rollover and I have tried building the rollover buttons in flash and importing them but I don’t like the way captivate handles the disjointed rollover. Is there a way to force a reset of the slide when it loads?
Any help is very appreciated.

Hi HighMileage - I know you said you are happy with the navigation as is and don't want to change it...but could you add a small "Description" icon next to each nav button and put the rollovers on top of the icons?

No. You can create a second (duplicate) slide to give the appearance of a "refreshed" state, but the best way to solve the problem is to avoid it in the first place ... by maintaining a linear approach to your Captivate projects (in other words, don't go backward).

A solution I sometimes use is to create a duplicate of the whole project - under a different name. Instead of going backward, the link will go to the duplicate project, which - again - gives the user the "feeling" of going backward but in fact, not.

Thanks for the reply. The navigation is non linear because the each slide contains an embeded swf which presents a topic independant of the others. The whole project is a discription of expanded functionality of a software program but each topic, again, is independant and the user may need one topic today but a different topic tomorrow. I've considered the duplicate slide route but ultimately the user may choose to navigate way from and back to the topic which would cause the problem to re-occur unless I have an unlimited number of duplicates.

    Hi HighMileage

One way you might get past this would be to create separate projects. One for each button. You could start with one and simply duplicate it as many times as you need in order to save reinventing the wheel. Then instead of embedding what I'm assuming is another smaller Captivate movie on a slide, the buttons are actually part of the project the user is seeing.

So the main difference would be that instead of simply jumping to a different slide containing the desired movie, a totally different movie would load up. Thus, preventing the hangover effect.

    Just a thought... Rick
