Question

SCORM and Blackboard 6

Hello everyone,

While Captivate 3 appears to be robust in its SCORM capabilities, I have tried and failed after long hours to implement a Captivate 3 assessment simulation in a Blackboard CE 6 course. I have been through the technotes, and tried many of the fixes, even changing a lower case "l" to a capital "L" in the word "schemaLocation" in an XML file as instructed by one technote. I have run the gamut.

As a result, I can import a Captivate 3 SCORM package into Blackboard CE6 (Campus Edition 6), so it will be recognized, but Blackboard CE6 will not report the user's scores-- the main reason for importing the package in the first place. The SCORM package should instruct CE6 to create a grading column and report scores, but it just does not happen.

I have also communicated with the Blackboard community on this and some of their "gurus" have thrown their hands up in frustration. I refer to this discussion thread at Blackboard: http://discussions.blackboard.com/jive4/thread.jspa?threadID=32286&tstart=0, where it appears Blackboard tried and gave up on integrating Captivate 3's SCORM protocols with Blackboard about a year ago after trying to work things through.

Wouldn't it make sense for Adobe Captivate's SCORM content to be compatible with this country's biggest and most widely utilized learning management system? This is not a rhetorical question. You've got some smart guys, Adobe. If you agree that it does make sense, please, make it work, or tell me (and by extension others) what works. I'll be happy to learn and eat humble pie.

You might try hardcoding the SCORM API version in the scorm_support.js file, to ensure that Captivate is using the correct API:

Instructions for doing so can be found near the bottom of this forum thread: No Score Data to LMS

Otherwise, Blackboard may not be correctly initializing the course. Captivate queries the LMS for available values by name when a SCO launches, and if the value is not received, Captivate will not attempt to send the value back.

Captivate does save a score, so it's likely something not set properly
in the CP file properties.
What it is, I don't know. Go over the Quiz Manager settings very
closely, trying different options.

Thanks for the response!

Ok, let me know if there's anything missing...

I looked in the "Advanced Interactions" section and noticed that all of my question slides have "Report Answer" checked but don't have the option to check "Track Score". If I go to the question slide properties, however, under the options tab, each question is set to "Graded - there are right and wrong answers".

This is the default setup since I created a new blank cp file and just started adding questions.

Any ideas why no cmi.core.score.raw? Any ideas why the "Track Score" option isn't available?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'm also experiencing problems with captivate 3 not sending the score. I can see that it sent everything else correctly including the LMSInitiatlize command. Is this some wierd setting in captivate that doesn't turn on scores? I'm on a dealine here Adobe... since when did captivate stop saving the score?

While I've no direct experience with Blackboard, I would strongly
suspect the issue lies with Blackboard and not Captivate.
There are stories tenfold about the net about issues with Blackboard and
true SCORM functionality, as well as general IT reviews of Blackboard
code being a mash of years-old spaghetti.

Not that Captivate is necessarily the essence of efficient programming,
not at all...but I don't think it fair or likely to put the burden
square on Adobe's shoulders. The fact that Captivate works pretty well
with many, many other LMS systems alone would indicate it's more likely
a Blackboard issue.

However, reading through the thread, this appears to be a Vista-related
issue? Only? I've not had to deliver any Captivate-specific projects to
a Vista environment so perhaps my above opinion is not as rounded as it
needs to be. Are you sure this is not a browser issue? Do you find the
Captivate files to work correctly in the ADL Test Suite and Reload
Player? If they work in those environments properly, then even more an
indication of a Blackboard issue...

Erik,

I am not putting any blame squarely on Adobe's shoulders. What I'm hoping to do is what I've done in the past: Stir up a little fuss in hopes that minds much brighter than mine will get together and find a solution. As long as Captivate 3 has SCORM capability, why not investigate whether a patch is needed to bring it into compliance with the biggest LMS in the world? Blackboard comes in more than one flavor. Our campus has hitched its wagon to CE6 and we are going to stick with it for a while. Vista does not suit our needs at the University of St. Francis.

I admit I am not the brightest bulb in the box. But I have looked long and hard at solutions at both Blackboard and Adobe before I posted my message. I mean no ill will, but I have found in the past that sometimes stirring the pot works. Or, shaking, not stirring.

Captivate 3 and Blackboard don't mix. They should. Someone should find a way. Just as someone found a way to make the RealTek codec and MS Office 2007 (Powerpoint) filt with Adobe Connect and Presenter.
