Question

SCORM Compliance and LMS

I am currently building E-Learning modules, and learning Captivate 3 in the process. One thing I am unclear about is how Captivate 3 interacts with a SCORM compliant Learning Management System. What exactly is the role of a LMS? How would I know how to calibrate the output settings for a SCORM compliant e-learning module? Do I need to understand what specific LMS is implemented on the client's end to be able to calibrate the SCORM compliant settings properly? If I were to complete building a module with a quiz feature, and the ability to track & interpret data, and where the user left off, would the module be a standalone app with Captivate alone, or would I have to configure it with another piece of software on the client's end to be able to interpret and track the results of the module's output? Basically, I am trying to understand the process and work-flow of an e-learning module from creation to delivery, to final application.

Ideally with SCORM, once you setup the SCORM options in the lesson, they
should work the same way with any SCORM-compliant LMS. That's what
spec's should do! Unfortunately, SCORM is young and things don't always
work out that way...whether an issue with the tool or the LMS seems
    completely variable.

The LMS is what organizes and presents the lesson (in this case, a
lesson created with Captivate), records whatever SCORM data the lesson
sends back to it, and generally allows reporting on that data. There are
many other features an LMS may have, but those are the core components
    (in my experience).

What settings to calibrate? Read up on SCORM, read the CP help file, go
through these user groups, and trial'n'error...

Ideally, whatever you setup in CP to track, it should send that data to,
and get that data from, the LMS as needed - depending on what data
you've setup to record. How the LMS reports on that data completely
depends on how the LMS is setup. But, ideally, your course should just
'work' if it's been properly setup.
    Hope that helps,
    Erik
