Screen reader and button titles

I am using smart shapes as buttons, and naming them accordingly. When I use the screen reader, the focus and order is fine, but all I get on audio is 'tab tab tab', it is not reading the name on the button.  I know that this work previously but now it's not reading.  Help please!
