Screen reader says "dot"

Hello. I am using Captivate 2019 to create accessible e-module for our LMS. I am having an issue when testing with a screen reader. Not always, but occassionally, the screen reader will say "dot" at the end of a sentence when reading copy. This happens mostly in headers. For some reason it thinks the period at the end is a dot. But if I remove the period, the screen reader won't pause at the end of the header and will continue reading the next sentence as if it was a continuation of the header. 

Any advice on how to either:

a) get the screen reader to pause at the end of a header

or

b) get the screen reader to stop saying "dot" when it reads a period.
