Question

Second question slide does not wait for answer

In Captivate 3 we created a course that contains quiz question slides, and we de-selected the "Report answers" checkbox on the Reporting tab since these questions are for review purposes only. (Successful completion of the course is based on slide views only.) We published the course on our Cornerstone-pilot LMS.

This problem happens only on some computers, and when there are several question slides in a row:

When there are two or more question slides next to each other, the first question slide behaves as it should, namely, it waits for the learner to select the answer, click Submit, and then click somewhere on the slide to advance. However, the following (second) quiz question slide that appears, appears only momentarily and then advances immediately to the next page.

For example, when there are question slides on page 15 and 16, question slide 15 behaves correctly, but once you advance to question slide 16, slide 16 disappears before you have a chance to read the question, and content slide 17 appears. So then you need to click the Back button to return to slide 16.

Thank you for any insights you may have.

I've also had occasional reports of this behaviour on one of my courses, and I haven't so far been able to confirm what the issue is.

Have you been able to actually watch this behaviour occur yourself, with your own eyes?  (Something I haven't been able to do because all of the users are in a remote minesite.)  If not, at least be slightly skeptical, as I have sometimes found a similarly reported issue turned out to be user error, because they were clicking the Next button on the playbar without realising it.

Assuming you have visually confirmed the issue occurs, there are a couple of things I would suggest trying.

  • Make sure your question slides are not set to a duration that is too short.  Try 3-5 seconds or more, with the pause point at least 2-3 seconds from the beginning of the slide, and see if that seems to help the issue.  I'm working on the theory here that some underpowered PCs can take a bit longer to process the results of the previous question and while they do this the Captivate module might not have everything set up properly for the next slide, by which time the pause point has been passed, so the question skips to the next slide.
  • You mention that this seems to happen when you have a series of quiz question slides. What happens if you add another short blank slide (say 1 or 2 seconds duration) between your question slides?  Does this seem to resolve the issue?

I'm VERY interested in any results you can post for this issue, as I haven't so far been able to find a perfect explanation for it, nor confirm it visually (in my case).

Rod, thank you very much for your quick reply and suggestions. (I'm been "putting out other fires" in the past couple of days: thus the delay in responding.) However, I'm hoping to come up with a solution very soon, as we need to post the two affected courses in the Live environment for our new LMS on the 21st.

Yes, the other course developer here and I have personally observed the mal-functioning of these question slides (i.e., a second question slide in a series).

I'll try remedying the problem by changing the slide timing of the second question slide in the question series, as you suggested. And I'll let you know whether timing changes fix the skipping bug.

FYI, here are screen prints of one of the slides with the problem:

What is the Try Again button on this slide?  Is this a static widget button?
