Question

Skin Editor flashes and disappears...

I have a vexing problem with Captivate 4.4.0.1 on my Windows 7 64bit system (12GBs of RAM, a terabyte or so of spare disk space, running on an Intel Core i7-965). When attempting to launch the Skin Editor, from either the Project menu or when publishing, the dialog flashes and disappears.

I’ve gone the full course of fixes, including deleting the preference DAT file, uninstalling and reinstalling, resetting screen resolution to make sure the dialog wasn’t off-screen, reviewing other forum solutions for similar problems, and coming up with a neat way to use the term “vexing”.

Nothing makes a difference.

If anyone has an extra-normal idea or fix for this, I’d be very thankful.

    Hi there

Sorry, unfortunately if any answers are to be had, likely Adobe is the only one that knows. The only thing that seems to stand out here is that you are running Windows 7 64 bit. And unfortuantely, for many users Captivate simply doesn't work cleanly on this platform. Exactly why is a large mystery, because for some folks it works just fine.

About all I can suggest here is to consider filing a bug report. Hopefully one of the Adobe Captivate engineers will see it and perhaps come back to you with a suggested fix.

    Cheers... Rick

Unfortunately (I suppose...<G>), the Skin Editor did work on this platform until recently -- but it's been at least a month or so since I last used it, so I don't have a clue what stepped on it and when.

I will submit a bug report, and run my projects from my 32bit laptop (ugh)...Thanks, Rick!

I feel a bit silly: I started considering why the Skin Editor had worked, and then suddenly did not work. That's a can of worms, so I went with Occam's razor and turned off UAC and rebooted. Works fine, now.
