Slide auto advances to next slide when smart shape buttons are on page of responsive layout.

If I have multiple smart shape buttons on a slide and I continue to click them, my slide auto advances intermittently. I've tried putting a pause in the On Exit simple and advanced actions fields. I've also placed a button on my master slide to test. It doesn't happen on every page, but it happens on many.

I'm not quite sure why the concept of a slide not advancing until you hit a next button is still such a cryptic mystery within Captivate. It's an extremely basic function that almost every eLearning course uses, yet it's extremely buggy and almost impossible to pull it off without a hitch.

Oh Captivate, when will you become a man?

It is not cryptic, it has been always the same behavior. If  you want more details visit:

Why choose Standard over Simple action? - Captivate blog

Or if you prefer a video: Simple vs Standard actions

I am puzzled by 'advances intermittently', if you want help, please post a screenshot of the timeline.

The On Exit event is not a good choice to pause, for several reasons: pause will occur after exit, which means on the first frame of the next slide.

Events and (advanced) Actions - Captivate blog

You can always log a feature request if you want. Captivate has its design, and what you are now mentioning has been the case for many, many versions. Either you remain unhappy about it, and switch to another authoring tool, or you learn more about the work flows in Captivate. It is up to you, I'm just a user trying to help.

Thanks guys, the answer was indeed the use of simple actions on my buttons. Although I've read this a million times in your blog, I didn't learn it until it just punched me in the face, haha. In fact, I typically always use advanced actions, but for some reason or another, got lazy this time and put a "show" simple action on my buttons. Never again will I use the simple actions.

As far as leaving Cappy for another tool, not a chance. Articulate and Lectora are both nightmares and I love that Cappy integrates with other Adobe tools so well. Not to mention, with a name like Adobe behind them, they aren't going anywhere for a while. So I may be a frequently frustrated Captivate user with it's many bugs, but I'm still a committed user. Oh yeah, and the other users are always way above helpful.

    Back to my hole...

By default slides do not pause. If you assign a Simple action, by way of the dropdown, the slide will play unless it runs into another element with a pause. Use Advanced Actions to stop the timeline from playing.
