smoothen mouse path - slows mouse movement

I am creating a video demo.  I would like to smooth the mouse paths, but it seems when I do that the mouse movements become very slow and one mouse movement starts right after the previous one.  If I take off the "smoothen" option the speed is fine.  Is this a trade-off I have to make?

Why can't I have both?
