Software and Hardware Spec for Captivate Output

Hi,

I have just been requested by a client to supply a minimum hardware spec recommendation and a browser version recommendation for a pair of large Captivate modules. Does Adobe have a list exist with these kind of recommendations anywhere? The spec for our project below:

Screen Resolution - 1920 by 1080

Output File Type - HTML5 with reporting switched off

Course Content - the modules contain up to 100 slides each with 720p video inserts, animations and quiz functions

We have tested the output with Chrome, Firefox and Explorer for Windows and Safari for MAC.

Anyone got any ideas about this? Answers most gratefully received.

Ashley

I agree with Lilybiri. The issue at hand has more to do with the bandwidth that is available to the client PCs on the network. There is no one answer to this question other than to say that you may wish to test deployment of your project using various video sizes and more importantly bit rates.

Stunning video quality is what we are all after but if your end users have to spend 30 seconds waiting for each slide to fully load and begin playback of the video, they honestly won't care how spectacular the videos are. Adversely if the load time is excellent but the video quality is poor, the result is the same. You're looking for a balance. Drop the bit rate to a point where load time is negligible and the quality difference is minor.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate what you are both saying. The clients have rather hijacked us a little as they requested a stand alone ( ie. local rather than streamed ) product and are only now realising why we suggested an LMS solution at the outset. Having said that, I think I have balanced the video quality/bitrate so it will stream OK across all but the slowest intranets. Do you know of any browser version data applicable to Captivate 9 HTML 5 output? Many thanks, Ashley.

The only metric that I know of is the scoring that html5test.com does for browsers compatibility with the HTML5 standards. I don't know that this is a measure that's appropriate for content created in Captivate but it would be a reasonable guide for most situations. Presently Chrome ver. 52 has the highest rating on their comparison. I certainly would avoid older browsers like IE.

Are you asking about the development system or the about the system of users of the course? For the last ones, the deployment and bandwidth is important, not their system.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your reply. I'm asking with regards to the users of the course. The client requested a stand alone, 'non 'LMS' product so it will be used locally and across their respective intranets.  I have warned them that the tool was not developed for streaming across intranets ( I tend to favour using VIMEO to stream the video inserts through the Captivate project when using across the web ). So it is really whether there are any local machine limitations and any earliest versions of Chrome, Explorer, Firefox and Safari (MAC only) that I should tell them about and whether any Plugins that need to be activated .This is the way they phrased their question...

(For each of the sections (or in the Both section), my colleagues thought it would be good to list the specifications  for screen resolution, microprocessor, RAM, media player version, plugins.  When you think of it, we have created a videogame. We should treat the installation the same way as what we would install for a videogame for our kids.)

      and

(What version of Internet Explorer is needed?  Of Chrome? Etc.)

    Many thanks again,

    Ashley
