Software simulation + what is happening in the background...

Sorry if it has been already answered - but how can I "combine" both in one go?

I need to record how to use my application - which is controlling another application - so I need to be able to record what is happening in the background as well - in the app I'm controlling - in between the clicks in my app.

Is it possible or do I have to perform two separate recordings and then combine them?

Some kind of a trigger - keyboard shortcut - to switch between the two modes?

Record few "slides" then record a video then switch again to "slides mode".

Or the only option is to record whole screen and then manually add "commentary"?

TIA

Thanks.

You mean about applications and switching?

My app - ID-Tasker - is 100% in control of the other app - InDesign - by executing series of commands - "rules" - that user can select from the list and build a Task - kind of Actions that you can record in Photoshop - but on steroids. BTW, ID-Tasker can also control Photoshop and Illustrator and more.

Because there are few modes of controlling InDesign by ID-Tasker - you can run task that will work for hours processing 100s of files independently - BatchMode - or user can work in the Interactive Mode and constantly switch between ID-Tasker and InDesign - and when recording tutorial, I would like to show clicks in the ID-Tasker - as "slides" & show what is happening on the list of "rules" - which one is currently executed - & what is happening in the InDesign.

OK, I have used Actions in Photoshop (and trained my peers for InDesign).

When I was a professor I have created many software assessments for Adobe tools. From your description you'll need more than just capturing either in sim or Video demo within Captivate. You want to go beyond the simple recording process. I believe it is possible but have no idea what your present skills with Captivate are? For sure, forget about the hyped new version, it is too limiting for your goal. But within Captivate Classic, using the point-and-click Advanced/Shared actions, variables, and maybe some JS to manage the assets created with both Software simulation and Video Demo my CP intuition tells me it could lead to a great interactive tutorial.

There is also a lot happening in my app - it's not just "fill a form and click few checkboxes" - so the best option would be, either use some keyboard shortcut BEFORE the mouse click or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Click to "inform" Captivate that it should then start recording video - till the next "regular" click...

The 2nd option - "till the next regular click" - would be much better, as there would be another huge benefit - when someone needs to click something else BUT the video recording mode shouldn't be interrupted.

So "2in1 for free".

I am sorry not to understand fully what you want, which could be due to terminology.

Are you using Captivate Classic or the new version 12?

Is this a software simulation in Demo mode or in Training/Assessment mode? You can switch between applications during the recording. I find it easier to pause the recording and set up the other application before resuming the recording. You can insert Video Demo slides (pure passive) if you want. Since you mention 'slides' it is clear that you point at a software sim, but Video Demo has a better editor and quality for parts where you don't need interactivity.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions.

I'm away from my laptop so can't check - but it's the version you get in the Adobe Technical Communication Suite.
