Source File Help - Editing

Hello,

I'm trying to make minor text edits to a source file that someone else created.  However, when I preview the file, I see a bunch of items that I don't see when I'm editing it.  I click on a button and text appears in preview, but I when I go back to edit, it's not there.  Any idea if this is pointing to an external text file that I don't have?

    Highly unlikely.  That would be a customisation of Captivate that very few developers know how to do.  The answer is more likely something far simpler.

     

    Check the layers on the timeline for the slide and look for small red X symbols that indicate some of the items have been switched off so that you cannot see them in Edit mode. 

     

    Developers usually do this so as to make the Editing view less complicated or 'busy' but doing this in Edit mode does not affect the visibility of those same objects at runtime.

    My guess is different. The original developer may have used multistate objects, which is even possible with a seemingly empty Normal state. It is one of the most frequent questions popping up when Ready-to-go slides (Quick Start Projects) are used as I explained in this blog:

    Problem is that those multistate objects are not easily detected as is the case for other features. May I suggest to open the Advanced Interaction panel (F9) and check the actions attached to the buttons you are talking about? It could be a simple action where you see one of the State commands (Change state, Go to Next State, Go to Previous State). If they trigger an advanced (or shared) action you'll need to open those actions to look if they include State commands. Those state commands will identify the multistate object. When you have found the object, open the Object state panel (State view button) to see and edit the states.
