Question

Standalone Executables

I have been using captivate for many months now and have always published as SWF/HTM. However, I want to now publish as a standalone .exe file. This works OK but do these rely on Shockwave Flash Player to work. For the life of me, I can't find a machine without SWF player installed to prove either way.

Many thanks for your help

Regards

Mike

MIke, I think you have misunderstood Rick. Yes, you need the player to play EXEs but it's a moot point because what makes an EXE a EXE is the player. A EXE is created (by Captivate) by "packaging" FlashPlayer (version 6) with the SWF you created in Captivate.

I'm a little confused by your original question. You say everything works ... but evidently for curiousity's sake, want to know if Shockwave Flash Player is required on the machine?? The answer is "No".

The entire purpose of the EXE output is to accommodate those users (end-users, not Captivate developers) who might not have Internet access, thus, might not have the Flash Player browser plug-in installed for their browsers (forget the "Shockwave" stuff - it's just a confusion factor in this conversation).

There is nothing tricky about this issue.

    1) Captivate installs FlashPlayer 6 when you install Captivate.
    2) When you publish as "Standalone", that player is inserted into a EXE which ...
    3) Can then run on its own, on any Windows PC, anywhere in the world.

    Everything else is "herring".

    Hi Mike

Indeed, as I understand it, Flash Player is included in the EXE output so it will work on PCs without the player installed. If you really want to thoroughly test things, perhaps you could uninstall the player, test, then reinstall?

    Hi Rick,

Thanks for the quick response. I successfully uninstalled Flash Player 9 from my machine. I then opened some existing SWF stuff to ensure they didn't play. owever, they did. When I right hand mouse the page, it refers to SWF Player 6 and I can't for the life of me find that on my PC. Anyway, will check the link you suggested to see if I can totally clear all SWF players off my PC.

    Again, many thanks

    Mike
