Hi

I am starting up making elearning courses which I will put on LMS in Wordpress as HTML5 and using SCORM hopefully, still reading in on it, but supported by LMS with plugins.

My computer specs of today are:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10850K CPU @ 3.60GHz
  • 128 GB RAM
  • C: and .D: NVMe Samsung SSD 970 1TB drives
  • Planning on some harddrive solution for media such as video, photos etc and, maybe ready/published "projects results", not sure if NAS or harddiskRack connected to PC.
  • Software: I have creative Cloud, today I have used Screencast-O-Matic for just saving some screen recording for explanation. Now with course creating I will add software, planning to use Captivate and/or Camtasia

I have some startup questions:

1) years ago using Premiere elements I set up several different harddrives for improving speed.

  • 1.1) Is there any setup guide on smartest way to setup folders/drives for Captivate?

                  (cache, project files etc)

  • 1.2) Will Captivate project have problem if original media is moved within e.g. E: drive?
  • 1.3) Will the same structure work for Premiere etc also?
  • 1.4) I have read about not using network drives with Captivates project file, are there also problems using network drives for media etc?

2) I am planning to be using Captivate for elearning with interactivity and also for the user to feel like using the software explained - like application simulation, but also sometimes only video demo type.

  • 2.1) Do you sometimes use e.g. Camtasia for screenrecording/video demo purposes and add into the elearning project in Captivate?
  • 2.2) Or is it better to screen record also for demo purpose in Captivate since I would get for example easier handling of WebCam and screens recorded at same time - e.g. choosing when to show/not show Webcam? Or other advantages not using Camtasia  or other screen recording source?

Regards Janne

You didn't get any answers yet. Know that this is a user forum and answering all your questions would take a lot of time.

I will limit myself to your last question. Personally I don't use Camtasia anymore, prefer to use Video Demo which is sort of a Camtasia clone, with less bells and whistles than Camtasia. Other users will have a different view without any doubt. My reason is that I can record a Video Demo slide inside of a normal cptx project and keep it in its 'raw' format so that the Video Demo editor is available all the time for non-destructive testing. I rarely use the webcam for simultaneous recording of myself, that is not the goal of an interactive eLearning proect.

I have used Camtasia in the past but did find the integration within a Captivate project rather cumbersome, and not always successful. Know that I am not a fan of passive video, but use capturing almost exclusively within an interactive course. Not the usual approach since most people believe everything can be learned from YouTube videos, but my past as professor and trainer taught me that that is an illusion.
