Strange issues with Captivate 10

Hi All,

I recently bought Captivate 10 after working with Captivate 7 for a while I decided to upgrade, but I'm having strange issues that effect the confidence in work in the software.
It all started with mailto links. I could not make a mailto link on 2 pages, after setting up the first link and doing the second, the whole functionality stopped working to make links.
I was adviced to import my text as plain text, but even this trick didn't work. Although the text was set to plain text and unneeded spacing was taken out. Copy pasting the text into captivate still gave me strange symbols.
After discussing with the client we decided to leave the mailto links out. (first dissapointment for the client and me)

Today I was in a Skype meeting with another client and I wanted to show him that I already styled the eLearning template that we will be using for the eLearning that we are building.
I opened up my file and it suprised me. All my layers were gone. In my masterslide I had a background, 2 colour boxed, text and a few images as SVG. All images and text dissapeared. I worked in this file a week ago and saved it as it was finished and everything looked sharp. I now opened it and I saw the background, the 2 colour boxes that I draw in captivate itself and a SVG type logo. The logo looked pixelated and the most suprising was that in that slide I had no layers anymore. I could not select anything on the slide by dragging the mouse over but also could not select a layer in the timeline as the layers were no longer there.

Also if I do copy paste or any other thing that make a comment box popup in the program, I get the Apple (problem sound). The sound indicating that you are doing something wrong but in this case i'm only copy pasting for example. Already had this issue in 7 and was suprised that this was still active.

These issues really creap me out as I'm taking in work that I should be able to do in Captivate the way I always did it in version 7 and you would expect version 10 to be an better version of this.

Please let me know if any of these issues sound farmiliar and if anyone have a tip to solve this.

- Could version 7 (that I still have installed) make conflicts with 10?
- Is it wise to reinstall the software as maybe the software got damaged?

Any help is welcome please.

Best regards,

Dick

I tried to read everything, but don't really understand.

Do not use template files (cptl) and certainly not upgraded cptl-files. Use themes for a consistent design.

If you do not want to take advantage of the added functionality, but want to use the same work flows as in an older version, stay with that older version to avoid frustrations. User interface has changed, work flows have changed...

Probably a lot of issues you are seeing are caused by upgrading old projects from 7 to 10 which is a big leap. There are no conflicts with having both versions installed (have 4 versions of Captivate on this system), but when installing 10 you need to follow the release notes. Some folders have to be deleted, because they need to be updated for 2017.

Copy/paste is a common work flow that always makes me shuddering, Captivate is not the only application that can have problems by using the clipboard over and over again. I'm on Windows, maybe Mac is better (they claim it at least) and this is not a problem for you.

    Hi Lilybiri,

First of all thanks for taking the time to respond to my issues.

I'm sorry if I wasn't completely clear, so let me try to explain better what happend.

    Issue 1:
The issue here seems to be solved 50% let me explain what happend.

I didn't use any older Captivate files. all was created from start in Captivate 10

    - Open new blank project
    - Choose "Slide master view"
    - Added a background image to the master
    - Placed 2 square boxes drawn with the captivate functionalities
    - Placed a textbox with text
    - Placed 4 images as SVG

So when I finished doing above I viewed my slide in the browser and it looked sharp. I saved the document and didn't use it till my meeting today.
I opened the project and wanted to show the layout that I had prepared, but....

    - The layers in the timeline were not visible
    - My text field was gone
    - 3 of my images were gone
    - The image that was still visible was really pixelated and unsharp

After haven posted my issue and now checking my project again, the layers came back. So I see the layers but still miss the items that were also in my design after I saved the project.

    Issue 2:
This was the issue as discussed in a different discussion. As you recommended I tried to import the text as plain text but from that particular powerpoint placing the text as plain text into captivate still added weird symbols to my text and the mailto link issue was still not resolved. I'm now working on a new project and already asked the client to also deliver me a plain text document. I think it's good to see if this issue continues to show up in my future projects. Your plain text suggestioned made perfect sense to me and would've been the trick, but I think the powerpoint file had some issue and even with taking out the text and saving it as plain text it didn't help.  I just tried it with creating a new project in Captivate and and making 2 slides and placing a mailto link on both slides and this didn't give me the issue. So therefor it is now hard to say if it was a Captivate issue or if it was generated by the Powerpoint file.

    Issue 3:
Yes I'm using a Mac indeed and on my Mac you have a warner sound when you are doing something incorrect. For example wanting to drop a file somewhere and it's not possible than you hear a sound. But within Captivate I hear this sound with every dialog box that pops up and not the dialog boxes that warn me but also the normal ones. Hope this explains a bit more what I mean. I work with inDesign, Photoshop, illustrator, Adobe Muse, Aftereffects and with none of these programs this sound appears when dialog boxes appear asking me to press OK to place an image or things like that. ps this is not a big issue I just turn of my sound

    Best regards,

    Dick

I am on WIndows, and it seems indeed to be a different experience. I never use PPT to start an eLearning course, IMO it is simply not a good practice at all.

You talk about 'master slide', but is that the Main master slide or one of the daughter master slides?
