Question

SVG slow in Captivate and HTML5

I have  a number of small SVG lines (1 KB) that I need to repeat on multiple slides. Each is either a simple curve or a couple of straight segments joined by a curve. Some slides may have a dozen or so lines.  These SVG files were saved from Illustrator with the recommended CSS Presentation Attributes setting.

The problem is these lines draw very slowly when authoring in Captivate, sometimes taking several seconds to appear and in general bog down the ability to edit slides.  More problematic is there is a noticeable lag in their appearance on slides when playing the published output in a browser.  It takes a couple of seconds for them to load.

Is there a fix for this problem?  My ultimate solution would be to replace them with PNGs but there are about 100 slides with up to a dozen lines on each and it would be very time consuming.  Of course it would be easier if it were possible to simply replace the SVG sources in the Library with PNG files but Captivate only allows you to replace the source file with another SVG file. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

You are not the first user to vomplain. iI am abit wondering why you didn't use the freeform shapes? I know, the editing possibilities in Captivate for shapes are lot less capable than in Illustrator, but it looks like having too many SVG's is a problem for Captivate. Maybe log a bug report to get at least the attention of the team. This is a user forum, as you probably know.

I needed to use bezier curves.  This is an exercise for connecting cables between 3 server computers.  There are 14 cables that cross one another. The curves help to visually separate them and show the connecting points.

By the way, there are no delays in SWF output - only HTML5 which is the required format.  Rather than cache the 14 cables it seems to be loading them externally on each slide.  It draws them one at a time and sometimes it takes a few seconds to build - which is disconcerting to the learner.

Sigh...  I'll log a bug report but in this forum alone I see that people have had the same problems unanswered for years so i don't expect much from Adobe.

Captivate's shapes are also using Bezier curves. The problem is that you don't have to full toolbox for Bezier curves as is the case in AI and PS. Add to that the fact that you cannot enter exact coordinates for the points and tangent points, and you feel crippled in Captivate to draw curves. Guides make the process bit easier, but it is still mor trial and error and that is a pains. Having used PS since 25 years, and AI bit less, I totally understand, and thanks for logging the bug. If all users who rant and complain on these forums would log a bug report, maybe it would be solved  years to get Rulers and Guides in Captivate, having logged features requests since version 4 and it was done in 9.0.1.
