Question

Tab Order and 508

Why is it that when I bring up the "Tab Order" box, it isn't populated with any of the objects that are on the slide. I have read the other blogs stating that slide needs to be selected and not the objects, and it still is not populating.

Thank you for your time,

Carol

Hi Carol

Depends on the objects. I believe Buttons and Text Entry Box objects show up there, but not Click Box objects. So if you have Click Box objects, try replacing them with Buttons that are configured to be transparent.

Not sure about Smart Shape objects that are configured to behave as buttons.

Cheers... Rick

Thank you Rick. I was thinking that the text would show up so that I can order it for the screen reader. Do I just order it using the timeline? Does it read from the bottom up?

Carol:

If you're talking about text captions, they don't show up in your tab order - they're not interactive. on the JAWS and NVDA screen readers the reading order is a bit weird -  it reads from left to right and slightly up - meaning if t you have two columns of text in one text caption like this:

One                Four

Two                Five

Three              Six

the reader will read "One Four Two Five Three Six"

two separate text captions with the same layout as above either read the same way as above, or might read correctly, or might read "One Four Five Six One Two Three" depending on how the reader picks up the captions.

If you want text to read in a specified order  and you don't want it to show up top to bottom, left to right - use smart shapes activated as buttons (make the action "No Action or Continue) and tab order the smart shapes. Just remember to put the text in the alt text area of the accessibility pop up, or it won't get read.
