Question

Text Field Hotkeys

Here's the situation:

I'm working on an e-learning course that trains users on a Web-based computer tool, and the course includes simulations on how to use the tool. I've used Captivate to capture and edit "Show Me" simulations, which act as pure animation with audio voiceovers, as well as to capture and add interactivity to "Exercise" simulations which allow the users to interact with the tool, clicking certain items, filling in text fields, etc.

Due to the length of the text the course writer has in the text fields for the Exercise simulations, an "auto-fill" option was requested, where the user would type the first word in the field, and if they were correct, the rest of the text field would populate with the rest of the text. The workaround I came up with for this was to assign the Spacebar as a hotkey for such fields, so when they entered the first word and hit Spacebar to go to the next word, it would submit their entry and move on. I changed the Correct Entries in the Text Entry Box options to accommodate for the single word entry, and as mentioned, assigned Spacebar as the hotkey. As it is currently set up, the Text Entry Box pauses after 0.5 seconds, and on Success, will go to the next slide.

For the majority of cases, this works fine, and when the user hits Spacebar, the simulation skips to the next screen to give the effect of auto-filled text. But in some cases, the hotkey isn't recognized. I scoured each Exercise simulation to find the culprit, and ensured that all Text Entry Boxes had the same options, were assigned the correct hotkey, and worked correctly. Finally, for me, they all tested out okay. But, when the exported SWF simulations are put into the overall course, we're getting feedback from test users saying that some (not all) of the hotkeys aren't working right, which is causing confusion and frustration on their end.

Does anyone know why this could be, and if there is a workaround or option I am not considering? Is there a better auto-fill option than assigning the Spacebar hotkey? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Instead of the SPACEBAR, why not just use the alph-character that is - say - the 3rd character typed for each entry. Though it may be browser-specific, the "spacebar" is often recognized as a replacement for the ENTER key, and (guessing only) that may be the source of problems. If you use a specific alpha-character (varied according to the word typed), I wonder if it might not be more reliable since no A-thru-Z alpha character by itself would be recognized as a shortcut recognized by any browser - right?

The only caution to this that I can think of off-hand is to avoid using any character that might appear too early, like the first or second character in a very long string ... which might stretch the "believability" factor for the end-user.

Thanks for the reply. I had tried that with a few of the entries, and have had to do so for some of them when there is only one word (making the last letter the hotkey). As it happens, the most error reports we get are from those instances, which is odd. But, I'll give it another shot and see if it aleviates any of the problems.

    Thanks!
