Question

Toolbar image remains on computer screen (memory issue?)

I downloaded Captivate 2.0 trial, but each time I'm in a project and selecting a menu item such as Slide/Properties, an image of the label for the menu item remains on my computer screen until I reboot. It doesn't seem to matter which menu item I select. I currently have 1,188 MB of available physical memory, 67.8 GB disk space. I wouldn't think this is a memory issue. I am unable to use Captivate at all for video screen capture but it captures the annoying image! Help!!!!

Sure sounds like a video card or video stress issue to me. Have you experienced this on a 2nd machine?

I've seen things similar to this - hanging graphics that won't go away - and I have had no problem fixing it on those few occasions by either (1) rebooting or (2) changing display properties (higher or lower physical resolution, and/or changing to a higher or lower video quality setting (say, go from 32 bit to a 16 or 24 bit color display, for example).

    Hi GinaL

I would agree with my esteemed colleague Larry that it's probably a video issue.

The reason for my post isn't just to say "me too", but to advise of one or two other video settings to take a look at.

    1. You may need to upgrade the driver your video card uses. I recall an issue with RoboHelp crashing a few years ago when a particular card was used and upgrading the drivers for the card corrected the issue.

    2. You may find that adjusting the "Hardware Acceleration" can help. Generally, one right-clicks the desktop, selects Properties from the context menu, (here's where things may differ - I'll list how it works on my PC)

I see Display Properties. I click the Settings tab. I click the Advanced button. I click the Troubleshoot tab. On this tab is a slider that allows configuring the "Hardware Acceleration". Try adjusting it all the way to the left and dismissing the dialogs.

There is no guarantee that this will work of course, but it may be worth trying. In all the years I worked support, I've seen this correct issues on a number of occasions. Bizarre, eh?

Anyway, if you are up for it, give this a go and report back if it works for you. If it changes nothing, I'd return things back to where they were to begin with.

    Cheers... Rick

    Larry and Rick,

Thanks for your quick reply! I tried your suggestion of Display Properties/Settings. My resolution is set at 1024 x 768 and I don't want to go any lower because the application I'm trying to video screen capture won't fit on the screen. I changed the Color Quality to Medium 16 bit from Highest 32 bit. On the Advanced/Troubleshoot screen, I adjusted the Hardware Acceleration back and forth. The rogue image did go away, but only until I switched to Captivate the problem started again. This must be a video card issue because the same problem is happening when I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 -- images from menu items remain on the screen from that application as well. I'll pass this along to our hardware guy and let you know what happens if I get a new video card. Thank you!!!!
