Trouble with image display

Captivate 4, inserting images: I have inserted screen shots from a mainframe/green screen application successfully  many times. However, sometimes the screen shot looks fine in Edit mode, but when I preview or publish, it displays black and blank.  The image files are pngs captured with Full Shot, and again, it works fine most of the time

Could you try to find out which PNG's do publish fine and which not? Perhaps you did use (partial) transparency in those that will not publish fine, or they have a photographic quaility? Do you now the bit depth of the PNG's? Mostly it will be 24-bit, but PNG exists also in 8-bit and 32-bit flavor (that last one will never be fully supported in CP).

Default quality for slides in CP4 is Low 8-bit, which allows for only 256 colors and you'll have issues with transparency mostly. You can change that quality for those slides that need it (with quality images) in the slide properties. Mostly I'll change to High or Optimized. This will result in bigger file size of course:

What is possible as well is to override the slide quality on publishing by changing the Preferences, this will result in having all slides the same quality (here 24-bit) and of course the file size will increase as well, and more than when you choose to setup the high quality only for selected slides that need it.

PS if it is still not sufficient, turn off the compression options...

Thank you, those all sound like excellent suggestions. The pngs that didn’t work are a little larger than the ones that did, on the whole.

I actually saved the screen captures as gifs and that worked, so I may just go that way, unless you see disadvantages to gifs.

    Thanks again.

must be a problem with the quality settins, you can change them on slide level and on project level.
