Question

Trying to load FLV's from local machines at runtime.

Hi all,
This one has stumped me!

We are trying to create a short module containing four small video clips converted into FLV's. Is it possible to load FLV's at runtime from the local machines rather than append them to the published zip. We cannot stream currently so settings are progressive download, any ideas?

Yup.

So how big are these flv files? What sort of bandwidth are you thinking your
uses are limited to? Any reason you cannot do more to optimise your flv
files? You can get some great movies in a very small footprint if you tread
carefully.

You could try adding a hardcoded path to a local FLV file in Captivate (i.e., "C:\Training\FLVs\movie1.flv"), but I seriously doubt it will work. You'll probably run up against both the Flash Player and web browser security settings.

Web pages are specifically prevented from accessing local files, since that's how worms, viruses and other malware are typically propagated.

Even if you add the local directory to the Trusted Locations list in the Flash Player Security preferences, you'd likely still have to monkey with the individual user's browser security settings to allow it to work.

Hi Rick,

Sorry, further details to give you a fighting chance!

We are using Captivate 3 to create the module and the published file is loaded to our server with scorm reporting. Within the module is four frames, each with a flash video player linked to an FLV.

The file link in the player has a note below the browse button: Enter the relative or absoulte path of the flash video file.

Is it possible to create a path that will load the file from the local machine rather than the server where the module resides.

We have a number of sites with limited bandwidth and saw this as a potential workaround.

Hope that makes sense !!

Thanks Tony

Welcome to our community, Tony

I'm not sure I'm following you. Particularly with your mention of "the published zip". Progressive download simply means that the .FLV is loaded (during runtime) when the slide presenting it has been reached.

Perhaps with more information someone can offer a more coherent response.

Cheers... Rick
