Question

Upgrade or not

Currently we are using Capt 2 and wondering if we should upgrade to 3. We have encounter numerous bugs in 2 and new ones seem to pop up everyday. I have made numerous called to tech support in India but they are just trained to say "we are aware of the problem and a fix will be out shortly" or, my fav "Just reinstall captivate!" Plus, I was at the Max conference and actually talked to a real life Adobe Captivate person, he wasn't aware of half of my issues; he's suppose to call me back, I won't hold my breath!

To give you background on what we are doing, we put together self-running demos of our software. We record our audio with Audition, then Import (which Capt 2 does do well with), then we add bitmap images, swf animations along with the usual highlight boxes. They are usually five to seven minutes in length and vary from ten slides to fifty. So our files are sometimes a little large but we try to keep them small.

But we have a lot of bugs and I just don't know if we should upgrade and risk the new bugs along with the old bugs. We have spent so much time figuring out the fixes we don't want to start over.

Any thoughts?

We were on Captivate 2 and then upgraded to 3. I like most of the features of 3. They have a lot of new enhancements that 2 didn't have like:

**PPT import w/animations as a flash rather than image (so any animations actually play on screen)**

**Ability to really use the branching techniques (although we haven't played around with it much - yet)**

**Ability with questions to use a pool of standard questions (again haven't had the need yet to play around - but look forward to)**

**Ability to attach a menu - although once you create it it's hard to modify it**

As far as audio - what kind of issues are you having? I actually use Captivate to record my audio. I usually do it after I have my captures in, though. The audio portion can be attached to a slide, a caption or the whole presentation. I can modify it (although not to the extent of an audio program) but enough to do what I need it to do.

I can say that I've yet to see a "bug" free release of any software and I've been working with various types for a very long time. I wouldn't let that hold you back if that's the only problem you're having.

Captivate 2 is a bugfest, should have never been released, everyone should get a free upgrade.

That said, most of the bugs have been fixed in 3, but some news ones have appeared.

We are still using Macromedia Captivate and are looking to upgrade simply because we are no longer able to purchase additional licenses. My main concern is with the process of converting our existing files to the new version. Has anyone run into problems and/or found solutions?

I did test Captivate 3 and I found some of the same bugs, the main one is with the audio. I was hoping that the bugs in Captivate 2 wouldn't carry over to 3 but there is always room for new bugs which then causes more time to find fixes. I know most of the bugs in Capt 2 and a spend a lot of time doing work-a-rounds, I don't want to start over with Capt 3. But I do like some of the features in Capt 3, for example, the slide transitions and the option to set an image as a new background. But I don't know if that's enough to make me upgrade. If everything worked correctly with the audio then I'd say "sign me up" but it hasn't. Which Adobe still hasn't addressed the problem. So I guess I answered my own question, I guess I'm not upgrading.

We're somewhat in the same position. While we don't encounter many
Captivate 2 issues, that's likely because our files aren't all that
complex (no inserted SWFs, for example)...or we're just lucky. I'm very
hesitant to move to CP3 and deal with any issues that may come up.

One reason I would is if a project required a lot of Full Motion
recording. I understand CP3 is a lot better than previous versions in
that regard. But even then, I'd use the trial version first to see how
    well it actually worked.

So that's what I'd suggest - use the Trial version and set aside time to
develop a representative course just like you would with CP2. Also, are
there any features of CP3 you want to take advantage of, or is it more a
hope that CP2 bugs have been addressed?

    Hi Melissa

Do not I know if I would be the correct person for such a subject, but to my opinion you would like doing an updating of the software but he is not sure if them even archives seram arrived-well in the Captivate 3, by chance you came using the Captivate 3 of test?
