Using the Skin Menu to Open URLs Outside of Current Window?

Background:I am using the Skin Menu (as a Quick Links menu) to open URLs on our intranet. The Captivate project is launched from a web-based LMS.

Problem:Regardless of how I set the URL to open (Current, New, Parent, Top) it always opens within the current browser; which is the module the student is working on - as this is a web-based LMS. At this point the user must either hit the Backspace button on their keyboard to jump back or close the page and start the lesson over again.

Question: Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong here?

Any help would be appreciated!

Dan

Dan, the LMS my be blocking the hyperlinks because of security protocols (especially if they are being launched as SCORM/AICC courses). Some LMS's lock down this "cross-domain" security from within flash movies.

Another option for you might be to add a custom footer to your HTML file Captivate publishes that displays the Captivate movie. It would be very easy to add a row of hyperlinks right under your movie, and set each hyperlink to target="_blank" to have them open in a new browser window. You can even stylize the links using grahics or CSS, to match your corporate branding or have them stand out as you wish.

    Hi there

It would help if you could advise which version of Captivate you are using.

    Cheers... Rick

    Hi Dan

I just tested with my own Captivate 3 and I find that the option for launching a URL from the menu in a New window works for me. At least it does when I test locally.

This would seem to suggest that because the lesson is being launched from the LMS it is causing issues.

One possible workaround would be to insert a slide into the project that the Menu would point to. Then you might try configuring the slide itself to launch the URL or you could insert a Click Box or Button object on the slide to open the URL.

Hmmm, in thinking about this I suppose a valid test to see if this would have any merit, you could insert a temporary Button and configure it to open the URL using the New option. If that also fails after you upload to the LMS, you may be sort of stuck.

I'd give that a go and see how you fare... Rick
