Variable text not as crisp as non-variable text?

As you can see in the graphic, the variable text (1 of 5) doesn't look like the text around it. They are the exact same Typekit font - same size, both bold, lined up perfectly.

I've tried everything I can think of, but the issue stays.

I've searched the forums and found much older threads with this issue and it doesn't seem to have an answer, other than to add variable text to the other text boxes. I don't want to do that since I like how crisp it looks normally.

Has this issue ever been solved?
