Question

Video timing right on preview, but not on publish

I have created video demos of my iPhone and imported them into individual slides in Captivate.  When I preview the project the timing is right, the slide advances when the video completes (I have them as autoplay).  When I publish as a video, it advances the slide before the video completes - the length of the timeline.  I'm assuming I need to find the length of each video and increase the timeline for each slide to match.  I wanted to find out if that is the best approach, and also wanted to see if I was missing something when I imported the video.  The video doesn't distribute across the timeline, I thought it would.

Thank you!

Thank you to both of you! I will try the MultiSlide video option. :-)

I have tried the "obvious," which is to use the Duration of Video setting on the Timing tab. This works in preview mode, but when I publish, does not work at all - the slide reverts to it's default timing of 3 seconds.

So, I have instead set the slide to "Specific Time," which I have matched to the duration of the video plus a few seconds. Since my video usually fades to black, this might seem like a great solution.

But then there are my users. My users like to pause video, or rewind a few seconds, and then speed up to skip some of what they rewound. They'd like to view the video much as they might on YouTube. This creates a situation where the video abruptly ends, per the set slide timing. Our LMS then marks the learning activity complete, and the user must return to their completed transcript to find the video and restart it. I realize that is a function of the LMS, but if the video ran as expected, the problem would be nonexistent.

What I'd like is for the Duration of Video setting to work. My expectation is that with this setting, users should be able to view as described above, and when the video is done, Captivate detects the ending and the continues with the module.

Are my expectations incorrect?  Or, is there a fix to this setting?

    Thank you,

    Jennifer

You are importing with these settings?

I was importing as an event. I only want it on one slide. Is there a key distinction between Event Video and Multi-Slide Synchronized Video when you only want it to run on one slide?

    Thank you

It does import to the timeline if you use Multi-Slide Synchronized video, then select Modify slide duration to accommodate video.

I'm compiling to see if increasing the timeline works.. but I want to try your suggestion.. I can go look it up on the internet or lynda.com, but which menu option is that under - video management?  I am not familiar with the multi-slide video option.. I don't do a lot of video work.  Thank you for sharing your knowledge

    Video/Insert Video

It's one of 2 options when you first insert a video in Captivate.

I've tried this by adding 30 seconds, then 60, then 90. It all depends on the lag that the user experiences, their device and their connection speed, thus unpredictable.

Now, I put the video (interactive element with YouTube url) on a 3 second slide, and have a button appear with a 1.5 second pause.  The video will play in the YouTube Widget, but the slide can be progressed at will by the user.

If you're in a mode where you have to ensure the video is seen, you could have the slide length be 1 minute longer than the video, make the button appear at the time of the video ending and the lag will be handled by the difference.

The key, of course, is to test, test, test. Test yourself, test by users giving you feedback reports, test observing users in their environment and evaluate the performance of the system, network, and trainee!

Thank you BDuckWorks.  I will try those options - increasing timeline and the YouTube link... Are the YouTube videos public then?

I might also go the other direction and move the captivate pieces over to Camtasia... hmm... Surprised Captivate doesn't just let me import the video to the timeline - it seems like it used to - no?  Maybe that was when we were still doing flash video pre-Apple iPad/iPhone days.

Thank you very much for your help
