Hi, I want to publish my project in a ".exe" and i notice that you can change the flash player version. I was wondering, what is the difference between the Flash Versions?

Is one of these version more compatible with the majority of users out there ?or Is there any version that will make my exe a smaller size ?

I am wondering because a lot of unexperienced user (with fairly old computer) will play my project and i dont know which one to pick...

Thank you !

Alex

Oh ok great ! Do you have any idea if Flash 10 will create bigger files (or files longer to open) than Flash 8. I was also wondering, do you know the difference between AS2 and AS3 (I dont have any quizes in my project, does it make a difference at all)

    Thanks

    Hi Alex

I'm hopeful that someone else will pop in with specifics on this.

When I produce content, I always opt for the lowest version available. My reasoning is that it has the least chance of forcing any users to upgrade their Flash Player to a newer version.

What seems odd to me with choosing the player version is that one might expect that choosing a lower version of player would cause you to sacrifice some functionality as a result. For example, I might expect to see Captivate issue a message upon choosing the lowest player version that reads something like this:

You have selected Flash Player 7. Your project uses Zoom Areas. Zoom Areas will not function in this version of the Flash Player.

Unfortunately, I've never seen a message like this appear. This would seem to infer that everything works. So I've always wondered what the purpose was (or the ramifications) for offering the selection of different Flash Players.

    Cheers... Rick

ok but i thought when you Published a ".exe" you didint need to have Flash player installed. I thought Flash was in the ".exe" so any user could run it without any preinstallation on his computer...

Is it or the user have to go on adobe.com and get Flash by himself?

    Hi again

As we understand it, that's the way it's supposed to work. Yes

However, curiosity got me one day when another forum participant asked the following: How can I determine what version of Flash Player the end user has if I create a .EXE file?

Most of us chimed right in with "you don't really care or need to because the EXE has the player built in". I'm not sure why I elected to do this, but I took the following actions. I downloaded and installed the Flash Player removal utility from Adobe. I ran it. Then I tested a .EXE file I had created with Captivate. I was totally astonished to see that the .EXE refused to run! Hmph! So I concluded that perhaps things aren't really as we thought they might be.

Keep in mind also that this was back in Captivate 2 I think. So things may have changed with the way this works since that time. Additionally, I've seen a report from a fellow Adobe Community Expert (Steve Howard) where Steve reported he tried the same steps I did and his EXE played with no issue.

    Cheers... Rick
