What's the deal with quiz navigation?

I'm have a few issues with quiz nav.  If the user hits submit without selecting an answer that question gets locked out and the user cannot clear or go back to provide an answer.  Is there a work around or setting to resolve this issue?  The second issue I've noticed is that the skip button doesn't work as expected.  The user can only skip a question if an answer has already been submitted.  They can't skip an unanswered question and then navigate back to it later.  Any work around for that issue?

Thanks

You have to understand the design of question slides. Once the attempts on question level are exhausted, or the user skips a question, the answers in that question slide are locked. Only retaking the quiz, if multiple attempts on quiz level are allowed, will clear all answers and allow the user to submit an answer as well. Question slides have very strict rules. I tried to explain the design in this very visited post, but some small changes have occurred for CP9:

Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog

The big change is the fact that there is no longer a confusion possible between Next/Skip. During the quiz you have the Skip button, meant only for that purpose. During Review that button will disappear but you can have the necessary B&ck/Next Review buttons. If you don't want to create custom question slides, you have to take into account the limitations and strict rules of question slides.

Submit All is a feature which appeared with CP6, and allows free navigation throughout the quiz, and the user decides when to submit the answers of all questions at once. However this has some drawbacks as well.

If you want to have total control, you have to create question slides from scratch, using standard objects/whidgets, variables and advanced or shared actions.  It will mean however a lot of work.

There is a setting found at Quiz > Settings > Required.  This is a drop down menu of options and some of them can drastically alter the behaviour of your quiz.  The LEAST restrictive option is OPTIONAL.  So if you're having issues with quiz slide behaviour, try setting the dropdown menu here to Optional (if it's not already).

I think you are using Adobe Captivate 9. If you want to give your users a warning that by clicking on Submit without a selection check off the option for Incomplete. This will create a caption that warns your users that they must answer a question before continuing.

In Captivate 9 there are two skip or next buttons on the slide. One of them is for review purposes and will only appear if the user is reviewing an already completed quiz. Check off the option for a Next and optionally a Back button if you want to give users the option to navigate separately from the quiz.

One option that might be useful to you is to open up the Preferences window (SHIFT + F8). In the sub category for Quiz > Settings you can select the Submit All option which will allow users to press a single submit button to submit the entire quiz. Warning messages can be shown for users who press Submit before they have answered all the questions.

I have a YouTube video on the topic of question slides for Captivate 9. Take a look and see if it helps you out:
