Question

What's the perfect software combination?

My new position will require learning modules that are primarily software tutorials. I'll need demos and interactive elements. I may also have to demonstate the logic behind setting up the software, so I may need more than just demos.

I want the product to be sharp, as it will be marketed, but mostly, it has to work perfectly. I want to include sharp interactions for re-enforcement of learning, but don't have to worry about SCORM or an LMS. It will be offered on their Website, but will need to be streaming--can you do that with interactivity? I guess so . . . I haven't worked with that before, and won't have to there--just create material that will work with that technology.

I currently use Captivate 2 for both softskills training and systems training. I have previously used Articulate and liked it a lot, except, of course, you can't do systems training on it. I've read about the new Adobe Presenter that used to be Breeze, but haven't used it.

I'lll need to buy software when I start this job--one of my first tasks. I'm thinking that I'd like to stay in the Adobe family to make things simple--I'm a Photshop & Dreamweaver user. I'm also interested in the Raptivity interactions. They look very cool and work with Captivate . . . anyone have experience with them?

OK. I need a package of software that will work together and that will do all the things I've outlined. What do you guys think?

There isn't a reason why interactivity should be less "streaming" then non-responsive or "static" lessons. You might want to do some more checking with folks that use Connect Presenter (formerly Breeze), as it can operate much like Articulate's Presenter. Whether or not it is for you might be better judged by someone who uses it a lot - and I do not.

For activity exchange as a part of the lesson, we use Media Semantics characters to create multi-party dialogs as part of the training. This lends itself well to interactivity, not just between the Media Semantics characters, but with the end-user as well. Media Semantics can be checked out at this link . Between $500 - $1,000 will get you the program, several extra characters, and even some new (and better, less robot-like) text-to-voice speech engines from 3rd party vendors (reached through the Media Semantics web site).

The high-priced spread in the interactive character world is also available with "VCom 3D" (located at this link . This product is expensive ($3,500 - $5,400) but it may be just what you are looking for.

I've only addressed a tiny slice of the world of interactive training, that of "characters" to replace a live presenter - as many of us were used to when using Power Point instructor-led on-stage training in days of yore. Others can add other considerations for you as they wish, but I hope this is at least food for thought.
