Why aren't all the Master Slides available for insert?

Hi, I am a Newbie using Captivate 9. I have applied a them to my cptx project. I am trying to understand why, when I click on Master View I can see not only title and content slides, but also a variety of question slides, yet when I go to insert a slide from the master view I can not access the question slides. Most frustrating.

I have read a lot about Master Slides and have read I can copy and paste them between projects. I have tried copying a Master Slide layout from Master Slide view, I know it isn't a project, and paste it into my project but that doesn't work. Seriously frustrated at these odd, apparent restrictions.

Following slides are read from left to right.

Select Master Slide View Question slides in Master ViewInsert into projectEnd of files available for insert - no question slides

Looking forward to understanding, hopefully.

Amanda

Hi Amanda,

When you add a content slide in Captivate, you can apply only the content master slides. And when you add question master slides, you can apply only the question master slides. That's the reason you are not seeing the question master slides.

Try adding a question slide by clicking Slides > Question Slide/Knowledge Check Slide, and you will be able to access the master slides related to question slides.

You can copy all the master slides from one project to another, except the main master slide (first master slide with a big thumbnail). Is that not working for you?

Let me know if this helps.

The Quiz master slides are very special: they have a lot of embedded objects, I mean objects that do not have a separate timeline (look at the timeline panel). Those objects also have functionality built in: the two-step submit process for question slides which starts when the user clicks on the Submit button, the way proper feedback will appear based on the answer being correct/wrong etc. Those objects are more than just placeholders as is the case for the content master slides. Do not delete those objects, if you cannot uncheck them somewhere.

Indeed, you have to insert Quiz slides using the Quiz menu, never with the Insert menu. The proper master slides will be chosen automatically, fitting for the type of question. And the score slide, which has also a dedicated master slide, will be added to your project by default without having to do anything.

Bit similar, but less known: when you import a PPT, the Blank master slide ill be used. When you create a software simulation, that same Blank Master slide will be applied. Do not put objects on the original Blank master slides, please.

Master slides are part of the theme. Learn more about themes in:

Hi Lilybiri,

Thank you for your response. I read the recommended article and followed your instructions. I just wanted to note that I get the same result, that is, the Likert Scale question is greyed out regardless of whether I use the Insert Slide or the Quiz > Question methods. I was doing some more reading and have found the Likert Scale question is greyed out because I have created a responsive project. I am assuming, always dangerous, that there is a problem with resizing the scale for tablet and mobile.

Again, thank you for your response, it has assisted my learning.

Kind regards,

Amanda

Likert questions are not supported for Responsive projects, they are for normal, blank projects.

However you can use a MCQ to mimick a Likert question, or use the Radiobuttons interaction (you can use more than one instance on a slide) to create a custom Likert question. Have articles about both approaches on my blog.
