Why is a Captivate 2017 project defaulting to Captivate 8?

I have both Captivate 8 and Captivate 2017 on my computer. I need both because some of my clients only have Cap8. Why is my Captivate 2017 defaulting to Captivate 8? When I go into properties to assign it to open with Cap2017, it still opens in Cap8. The project was created and saved in Cap2017 NOT Cap8.

You didn't mention your OS/Platform, so it may differ based on that response.

On windows, the default application that opens a file extension is stored, I believe, as part of the registry. If Cp8 was installed before CP2017, which seems highly likely, you may need to edit the registry entries to ensure CP2017 comes first, or change the Cp8 entry so it's not looking for the same filetype as the later version.

To open files in Cp8, you'll still be able to launch the application and use the file menu to issue the open command, then browse to the file as Lilybiri suggest in her workaround.

It is not as easy as that, Brian, at least not on Windows. I have tried all possible work flows, but clicking on any cptx file will always open it in CP5.5 on my desktop. Hence my recommendation to first open the correct application, and open the cptx files from that application.

I have a similar issue since many years, all CP projects try to open with CP5.5. FYI: have 5.5, 7, 8, 9 and 2017 on that system.

My workaround: first open the application (Captivate) and open the file from within the app, the correct version.
