Does uploading PowerPoints reduce end user bandwidth needs?

Will uploading a PowerPoint file to the Adobe server result in reduced bandwidth needs for our webinar attendees?

I use Screen Share when I host webinars since I use PowerPoint presentations, but some of my end users don't appear to have enough bandwidth to accept the feed. They report "choppy" audio which sounds like their local internet is probably a bit congested. We know that the bottleneck isn't local to us, so I'd like to find a way to reduce the bandwidth needs at their end. My bandwidth hog is clearly the screen share so I'm looking for ways to reduce it. Uploading the file to the Adobe server would reduce *MY* needs at least as far as pushing it out of my building, but would my attendees see any reduction?

Screen sharing is the highest consumption of bandwidth function that you can do in Connect. So yes, uploading the PPT(X) files will result in a much lower bandwidth demand.

You can check the bandwidth demans by clicking on the small green object in the top right of the room (just right of the Help button).

    This has not been my experience. Sharing my screen requires a download of about 800k/s on average, or about the same as when I have a Video Pod on Standard quality. By comparison, the Video Pod at High quality averages a download of about 5 MB/s, or about five times as much bandwidth as a screen share.

    But how would uploading my PowerPoint save on bandwidth? Does the share pod on the participant's computer download the entire file in the background or does it stream each slide individually?

    Well the bandwidth that screen sharing depends greatly on the resolution of your monitor and how much motion there is on your screen. Sharing a 1920 X 1080 screen image with lots of moving graphics or changing screens will consume a very large amount of bandwidth where a 1024 X 768 screen image with mostly text and stataic objects will take much less bandwidth. So there are a large number of variables as to how much you are actually demanding. Either way it is more than just uploading the presentation.

    How Presenter loads: the presentation is loaded in to the Flash Player cache on the attendee's local computer. When the presentation loads it fully downloads the first three slides and then pre-loads an additional slide in the background every 3 seconds untill all the slides are loaded. Once they are loaded, the only bandwidth demand you use is to send a sync message to cue the next slide or animation for everyone's local version of the presentation. The amount of bandwidth demanded is dependant on what is in the presentation, but it does allow low-bandwidth users the ability to view the presentation pretty cleanly.
