Question

Downsides to always sharing screen?

Hello!  My instructional webinars typically have 30-60 attendees.  Basically, Connect is used for (presenting) PowerPoint slides inter-mixed with (screen share) live demonstrations of browser-based searching (Google, research databases, etc.).  I show a few slides, then share my screen for some web browsing, then stop sharing and go back to the PPT slides, etc.

Is there any reason I couldn't just share my screen the entire time, and toggle back and forth between a PowerPoint window and my browser and tabs?  It would sure help the presentation flow.  The Pro seems obvious to me.  What Cons are there?  Thanks in advance!

Here is my list of pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Simplified workflow, no need to stop sharing and start sharing different things in the Share pod
  • No need to worry about PPT(X) formatting issues. A small but sometimes time consuming issue.

Cons:

  • Demands additional bandwidth. Screen sharing is the most bandwidth intensive thing you can do in Connect.
  • The quality of the slides will be reduced. The screen share image is a reduced quality image, so gradients and images may look lower in quality.
  • Animations won't play as smooth. Screen sharing runs at about 3-5 frames per second. This means that your animations on your slides will appear to skip. Faster animations may not be seen at all. If you upload the PPT(X) file, then the animations play back as they do in PPT for everyone.

Hi charlesd91644242,

You can continue sharing your screen while toggling back and forth between a PowerPoint window and you browser tabs.

For this you just need to share your screen and not upload the ppt in the share pod.

While your screen is being shared, you use powerpoint and all the attendees will see the power point presentation and when you need to browse the web, just go to the browser and toggle the tabs as per your need and all the attendees will be viewing that.

I Hope this helps your case.

Thanks.
