FLV playback ???

Hi there,

i have uploaded a FLV file to the Content Library and then wanted to share it in the meeting room. But even though I could upload it, i could even have connect to open a display with a playback controler, BUT THE VIDEO DOES NOT PLAY. The display is black.

I know I could take advantage of converting the video to SWF format, but that DOES NOT GIVE ME THE PLAYBACK CONTROLER. So this way I have the video but i cannot pause it, rewind it etc.

And what Im really after is that controler cause I do not have the capacity to be creating all the video file into swf and addind some controlers manually.

So I wonder why the FLV (native flash video format) does not play correctly in Connect meetings. I have workshops where video is very important but I need a tutor to control the playback. And at the same time I need the tutors to prepare their videos themselves and I cannot ask them to develop some extra SWF VIDEO CONTROLERS ...

so what do I do with my FLV??

thanks for advice

Terry_at_RefinedData - you product looks good.

Question - we currently create icons or URLs within Presenter that points to our a file on our FMS server or via our CDN provider. What would be the difference in terms of playback with your tool?

j9lemmon - your question/scenario sounds like its from within the Connect Pro meeting room. Currently, only Hosts & Presenter can see the playback controls with an FLV running in the meeting room. Participants don't see any controls whatsoever.

You need to find a way to pop your videos outside of the Meeting Room if you want to use the On2 VP6 codec. The SP3 release still will not play any codec other than the old Sorenson format.

We have developed a product called RefinedVideo that works around this by popping a frameless window automatically from a Presenter slide and which automatically closes when it's finished. The video always stays on top (it reclaims focus every few seconds) and will play with almost no buffering. You can use this technique to play content of unlimited length. A sample demonstration is available at http://Train.RefinedData.com/RefinedVideo and I can provide a free trial to anyone who is interested.

This works on stand-alone presentations or inside of meetings and recordings.

Send me an email or Skype "terryshane" for more info.

    Good Luck.

Your solution looks intriguing. There is however an additional issue I have. That is: I want the Host to be able to see the playback controls but I don't want Participants to see playback controls or have any control over the movie.
Is it possible to do this with your software?

    Hi John,

The simple answer is that we can remove all controls from the playing video for participants so that they cannot pause or rewind the video but the host cannot control the playback for users since we start the video outside of the Connect Pro environment to circumvent the limitations of the Adobe product. When the video finishes playing, its window will close automatically returning the viewer to the meeting room.

I can arrange a demonstration if you are interested.

    Regards,

    re jonturkle's comment:
'Until Saturday Connect could not play the ON2VP flash codec - only the spark codec. (the only output available in Flash 7)
Supposedly, the SP3 update now enables Connect to use the ON2VP6 codec'
I have found that Connect servers played VP6 FLVs fine, even before Saturday, but only if the FLV is called by a hyperlink from within PPT, with no SWF inserted in PPT.
When a SWF is inserted, even though the URL in the SWF is pointing to the same FLV, the FLV does not show up (this occcured this morning).
So it seems to me that, even with the SP3 upgrade, VP6 FLVs won't display when using SWF inserted into PPT.
I'll be testing this more later today.

    to jonturkle:
    thanks for the points.
Since you say, please, i would definitely like to know more about the method of creating extra control bar for SWF videos. I assume that this way the SWF file could also be set to have specific buffer and when it is loaded, it is loaded for next playback .. right?

Yesterday, I tested the FLV playback on a much slower connection and realised, that the FLV does not have any buffer (or bad one) and after the movie is played it does not stay dowloaded for a second round. So next play is, again, next wait.

Or at least that's what it looks like to me since I do not have knowledge of what is happening under the hood of programming ...

I was told yesterday by Adobe that there is some new update of Connect that should address the issues of video playback in much more reasonable ways. How, what and when i still dont know.

There is also one issue with Share ... ing ... this feature is great but currently FLV does not record the activity in real time ... so when we are testing to have workshops that utilize certain animation applications, where you need to see solid playback in real time, currently it is beyond any use (almost). This may be done using premade movies in worse case... and that's where I come from

    thank you

I'm having similar FLV issues, so I'm glad to hear that Connect can now play the On2VP6 codec. When you say 'SP 3 update' are you referring to an update for Connect?
Another FLV issue I have is that FLVs play in Presenter, but not in Breeze Meeting, unless the person is registered as a presenter. If a person is just an attendee, they don't see the video. (We put a hyperlink to the FLV in PPT).
    Thanks for any advice.

Try FLV for Flash Player 7 (the current FP for Connect).

If you use SWF, I would suggest using Presenter and PPT, then you will get your playbar, with syn'd and un-sync'd navigation for the meeting room. Feel free to PM me or Jorma if you have more questions.

Good call Sean. The FLV 7 works exactly how I imagined.

the FLV playback is kinda unreliable but i can see to manage. Not always plays the whole video, sometimes is does sometimes is does not. one also has to rewind the file by klicking on the begining of the timeline ... but i could live with that

i hope next upgrade will treat FLV format better

I will also test the Presenter plugin. We have that available as well so this seems to open up new possibilites also as long at it keeps time for video preparation down.

    Thanks a lot

The reason you were having problems with the FLV content in meeting may hav eto do more with the codec than the version of Flash. Until Saturday Connect could not play the ON2VP flash codec - only the spark codec. (the only output available in Flash 7)
Supposedly, the SP3 update now enables Connect to use the ON2VP6 codec it will also mean that you have to have at least the Flash 8 player loaded onto your computer.

More to the point, the most reliable method to bring a swf file into a Connect meeting with a player control is to use Flash and create and swf player which references your on-line flv file by its url. When you do that the player controls can be synced or unsynced. There is a special trick to that method that I would be happy to share with you if you are interested. I have been attempting this same method with Captivate but I'm not sure I have been able to find a work a round to the one issue in identifying the location and name of flv file that has to happen for this method to work.
